1988 turbo coupe 5 spd swap May 08, 2015, 12:58:52 PM I've recently purchased another tc the only thing wrong with it is it has the pos a4ld. I was wondering what all is needed for the swap. I tried searching but couldn't find much info. Can I just pull a t5 out of a 4 banger mustang? Will the mustang pedal assembly work or does it have to be out of a tbird? Do I need a center console out of a 5spd car or can I use the one in it now?thanks. Quote Selected

1988 turbo coupe 5 spd swap Reply #2 – May 08, 2015, 02:35:44 PM Consoles are same, I believe shifter surround may be different but nothing to keep it from working...All the pieces from Stang will work but it uses a smaller clutch(stock TC clutch is barely adequate), the '87-'88 TC clutch is hydraulic, need to decide which route to go... The '86 earlier TC used the larger clutch with a cable... Should be able to use Stang crossmember...You'll need a TC drive shaft from 5-speed or AOD Bird... The A4LD is longer than other Ford transmissions of the era, has a unique cross member that is useless for any other transmission... Quote Selected

Bell housings for cable and hydraulic are different... I'm not 100% on what can be mixed/matched between years, I know 4cyl & 5.0 Stangs use a different cable but I believe pedals for Stang and '83-'86 TC are same...Would be a good idea to check over on NATO, I believe they have a FAQ on the 5-speed swap...I took the easy route, wanted a automatic with my 5.0 so specifically searched out a white, auto, TC without EATC or hole in roof(actually found two & even luckier both had black interior)... Then lucked into a $100 '87 Sport with a dead 5.0 that gave me all the miscellaneous parts needed for my swap... Quote Selected
