A/C Compressor Troubles (help.. please)

I went to my local Auto Zone to buy a new compressor for my 88 5.0 Bird.  When I went to put the new one on, I noticed that the bottom of the compressors were different.

The compressors mount in 4 places on the bottom.
The old compressor fit (obviously).  When I went to put the new compressor in, the compressor would not fit in the brackets that the old compressor fit in.  I am so confused as to why the hell this happened.  I've been through several different brands trying to find a compressor that fits.

Any ideas? I'm stuck.  I'' try to get pictures for you guys.  I can't be the only one who has had this problem.

could have been a performance swap on the belt setup.  Smog delete, power steering pump relocation, under drive pully's etc...  That would mean a different compressor than would be t-bird. maybe even a mustang AC swap.  good luck.
