Defeating PATS

I have a drive train out of mercury grand marquis.  I would like to swap it into my nephews 4cyl stang this fall, does anybody know how to defeat the dreaded PATS?  I have read that it can create a little bit of a headache when performing 4.6l swaps.  Thanks.  Matt

Older ecu, ford dealer, chip it.

Yeah, I figure to have to chip it.  I plan and swapping over the pcm and harness to make it a cheap a swap as possible.  I just don't want to have to deal with the transponder and keys and .  A chip will allow me to burn it out of the equation.  or...... a older ecu out of a 95 bird..........

I sent my 4.6 pcm to Ron Francis wiring and they removed the pats, egr, and emissions (second set of O2 sensors). They also set it up for a return type fuel system. Don't remember the exact cost but was around $200.00.

I would think a shop that installs remote starters can help you for cheap. Remote starters typically have an additional little module that tricks factory anti-theft systems into thinking the factory key is being used

If it's prior to '03 you can get a equiv year CVPI ECM and that will disable PATs completely... After '03 there are other features that will require reprogramming, might as well have PATS disabled in the current ECM...

I have a '99 CVPI puter in my '98 Grand Marquis, the PATS light still blinks(goes ape shiznit for a few seconds) but it starts and runs fine on a $1.50 hardware store key... Been running that ECM since fall '10 with no issues at all...

BTW PATs only applies to '98 & up, prior GM/CV did not have feature... Problem with swapping a '97 for a '98 is i98 is first year with COP(Coil On Plug), so it won't work without changes..

As far as swapping, why would you want a oversized lump like the 4.6??? They are fine in their original environment(no that's not even true, I've driven '97/'98 Stangs, pitiful), I'd never consider a modular in anything else...

The Modular motor is free, so cheap.  My nephew needs to take a easy step up from his 2.3.  If I drop a 5.0 in, its not gonna be slow/weak/cheap.  It'll be a rocket.  The GrandMarquis is our old demo derby car.  Motor and trans and harness are still in good shape, so................

If it's a '00-'03 would be a good idea to check timing chain guides as those years have issues(4.6 is a interference engine) & anything with the plastic thermostat housing is likely to crack... That POS is leaking on my '98 & car has 62K mi...

Do the pi swap stuff on it. I'm not a 4.6 fan but i respect them. my buddies 99gt moves out pretty well. and my other buddies old 2.3 auto was about 1/2 the speed of a cfi 3.8...

88hp<260hp any day of the week...

Yep that includes the DOHC, and I owned one...

Without hacking up the car, they are too big to fit in any early Ford unibody chassis...

The swap motor is non PI, and I do know the benefits of the PI as I daily drive a yellow 2000 GT.  And yeah a NA 2.3 is just soooo slow.  Even with the roller cam swapped in and a "home made cold air intake"  its super duper slow.  But he did tell me he beat his buddies cavalier with it so maybe its not the worst engine out there.
