anyone ever try vinegar on surface rust?

I was randomly clicking videos on YouTube and saw a rust removal video i couldn't believe. Had some expired vinegar in the cupboard and figured why not. I am blown away so far.

I will have some pictures up probably later today.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

As much as i look up to damiacs restoration, i don't think i am capable of such work. I've never welded or done any bodywork before. I am afraid that the more i uncover, the worse it will get.

I have holes through where the trim panels go, almost completely around the fender lip, the rear part of the rocker for sure. This is the result of a bondo repair hidden by the trim panel, plus i am guessing a badly prepared respray.

Even where there are no bubbles in the paint, there is surface rust evenly distributed equally around all of the metal. Where ever water might sit or puddle results in a hole.

Btw, vinegar works awesome. In about an hour, i exposed completely bare metal after some light sing around the bubbles. Then i put some vinegar in a spray bottle, held a paper towel against the area i wanted cleaned and hit it with the spray until it was saturated and stuck to the car. After 15 mins i hit it really quick with a wire brush, rinsed with more vinegar, then reapplied the paper towel in the same way. Working on getting an upload to photo bucket now.

Depends on how nasty the rust is. But vinegar has a weak concentration of acetic acid in it, so yes it will break apart rust :)

hum, im curious

been doing permatex rust neutralizer.

our biggest problem in my garage is doing too good of a job taking rust off.
the product "requires" some iron oxide to remain to activate the stuff in the can.

ironically, if you take off all the rust, the permatex rust neutralizer will **CAUSE** rust  LOL.

so our recourse was to take off all the rust and where there were areas that the stuff in the can caused a thin film of rust, we just resprayed over the light rust dusting and like magic the rust was gone.

vinegar wont touch Buffalo rust...I use other  stronger rust dissolvers. I also use Zero-rust to prime rusted areas. It can also be used on non rusted metal
