aod converter

hey guys. dumb question thats surprisingly hard to find. in a car with a totally stock AOD trans, can you use a nonlock converter?

The Baumann shift kit says nothing about it disabling lockup. I'm not sure if the valvebody could be altered to disable it hydraulically or not. The "one-piece input shaft" that I believe fits the larger, ~3/4" to 1" spline and leaves the smaller, again guessing ~1/2" spline (people call it pencil-sized, relative to the rest of the transmission shaft-ery lol) empty, with no shaft in it. People get rid of lockup this way.

My AOD has every internal hard part it came with, I have installed a Baumann shift kit, and I do not have lockup in my Dirty Dog converter. This converter actually did have the spline hole in it for the lockup shaft to fit into. Still has to "clunk" 4 times I think before the converter is on all the way. But it must not be connected to the front cover of the trans, or whatever element internal to the converter it would normally be bolted/welded/cast as part of.

AOD locks to the body of the torque converter any time you're in 3rd or 4th.  There is no lockup clutch, it simply switches from the input shaft to converter shell.  You can't get away from it, but you don't really need to.

well let me word it this way. im looking to buy a new converter. lock ups (stock configuration) dont seem to go very high with their stall speeds. i know people can tear apart their trans's and put in a one piece shaft and strictly use non lock up. but my old trans isnt worth all that trouble. can i use a non lock up with my bone stock trans? i dont care if i lose economy or anything lilke that. will it go down the road and shift 1-2-3-4 and function like a trans should? my biggest worry is if the non lock trans only uses the outside shaft and my 3-4 gears are on the inside shaft, so id have 1 and 2 but no 3 or 4.

i actually did before i asked here. i could not find a simple yes or no. there was always some other mod or something adding confusion. i guess next step is to register there and ask.
