No start on my 86 5.0 Bird.

As a new T Bird owner, I have had a problem with Starting and rough running. Finally found out the problem. Distributer module. Purchased a new one and the car started and ran but not well. Found the original Motorcraft module in the trunk and installed it. The car has been running fantastic until today. Wouldn't start again! After checking out everything else, I pulled the distributer and swapped the module for the one that I had purchased before (It didn't run well then). Now it starts and runs pretty well. Note: the new module that I purchased was not Motorcraft. It was a Borg=Warner. Has anyone else had these same kind of problems? Seems to be a weakness or maybe it is just my Tbird. I think that I am going to try and find a new Motorcraft module. Herb

You need to change the PIP along with the TFI !!! If you want to get fancy remote mount the TFI modulet!!

Actually you need to pull the codes and stop shotgunning problem so maybe we should back up a couple steps

When the TFI module is changed it doesn't care spark problems is highly likely the peppers next But the right thing to do is pull codes first

All you need is a paperclip to do it

Thanks guys, I will try to pull the codes tomorrow. I never had a car with these kind of problems. I've always had old cars with basic simple to diagnose stuff. I'll let you know how I make out tomorrow. Thanks again. Herb

I've never really great but the process because you end up moving your timing to include this in your troubleshooting

It's not really that big of a deal though

I have a ONE SECOND TEST PROCEDURE STACKS. Jay that is why i have a spare known good DIZZY in my tool box. Remove the plug from the cars TIF plug it in to the test DIZZY key the ignition and spin the shaft with your fingers. (NOTE it does not have to be a dizzy of the same cylinders. For example yopu can use a 4 cylinder dizzy to check a 6 or 8 cylinder engine) If you have spark you know where the issue is. By the way Jay you do know that the DIZZY makes spark without the ECM even being hooked UP!!! So codes are a MOOT ISSUE!! THE TIF dizzy works void of the ECM. So if he is having ignition issues codes do not MATTER!! If he has a drivability issue he needs to pull codes that is a GIVEN.

I always just marked current position on the distributor with a sharpie(just draw a line from the base to the timing chain cover) then I loosen the dist bolt and rotate it by hand with the key on engine off. no need to remove the dist if its not the problem, then you just line it back up to your mark and your done.

the op has enough to start with but ill add this comment.

ever stripped down the stator or PIP to see whats in there?

my conclusion on two defective ones all came back to one common point.
the black wire bonds to the mounting braket with an electro weld / solder joint.
both failed stators were corroded and one was actually disconnected.

they parallel the black wire as it transitions to the molded female spade connector such that a pig tail branches off and bonds to the mounting braket of the stator.

ive often wondered if it would not be best to imply cut the black wire on the stator and ring lug it inside the dizzy directly to the mounting braket so the ref ground can be easily managed.

ive got pics of one of these i disected

Tried to pull codes using the service light on the dash. Nothing. Then hooked up a test light to the output and I did get only one code. (1 1) I guess that means that everything is O.K.. The car is running O.K. now but I'm going to keep my fingers crossed. I did notice that the tfi module is very hot but that may be normal. we will see! Going to a car show tomorrow and hopefully we will be alright. Only about 20 miles away. Tom said to change the PIP. What is that? Herb

here is whats going on inside the stator i described earlier.... old thread pic from 2007
the uninsulated jumper shown consisted of about 6 strands of solder tinned copper.... 4 of which were corroded and open.
