Flex pipe

What is the name of that flexible tube that goes from the underside of the air clearer housing into this metal tray type thing that attaches onto the underside of the exhaust manifold, and what is it's purpose? I'd take a pic but mine is missing. I imagine for emissions.
Current: 1986 Thunderbird, 105k 3.8/C5, 2 tone  Midnight Wine/Medium Taupe, wing windows, wire wheel covers.


Former: 1985 Cougar GS 115k Oxford White/Regatta Blue, 5.0, full console, 14" 8 hole aluminum T-Bird rims, Edelbrock valve covers.

Ahh, thank you!! That was my 2nd guess. So it's not a "you need this" piece then?

thats correct, however, your at the mercy of the inspector.

have him/her explain where in the emissions one line diagram does this missing part show up if contested.

they sell these very cheap at the auto parts stores.... even in walmart or kmart i believe.
