87-88 Tail light housings

I've got a right and a left tail light, both disassembled and cleaned. I polished the outer lens inside and out, I also polished the filter layer (the middle lens) and resealed with black silicone.  While apart, I repainted the inside of the outer lens where the black paint flakes off and replaced the nylon plate screw bushings.

They look great.  The right side is nearly without flaws, the left has a stone crack in it (see pics) and part of the lens by the license plate is broken off, but it's not very bad, from 10 feet you wouldn't notice.

I just put 3 or 4 hours each into restoring them to the best condition possible, so my prices may be a little above normal asking, but I think that the part condition justifies it.  For the right side I want $80 shipped, for the left I want $60.  I will take and post more pics for anybody who needs a better look, which I completely understand.  I have a perfect left side that needs the same treatment, that I could sell instead, if nobody wants the one posted.XXX

These lights are a huge pain to recondition. I'm hoping (again) with the nice weather this weekend, I can get mine finished up and mock-mounted on the car. You really don't know how good or poor you did with the work until they're mounted, and yours look quite good.

I've been ding ones in good (but dirty) condition. Others should be doing the same. Our outer lenses are very fragile now with their age.

I've been ding them as well, also buying all the decently priced ones I see on the bay.

Those do look nice. If you still have the right one for $80 in a couple of weeks, I might get that one from you, to save some time on my project. If you have another left one reconditioned and without the rock chip, I would take that one as well. I'll LYK.

As a matter of fact, I do. Just finished it up today.  I'm leaving for Detroit tomorrow morning for a week. I'll get a pic up of the other left housing before I go, but I won't be able to ship anything to anyone who might be interested until the 13th.

My other LH tail light. No chips, cracks or any other garbage like that. Same as the RH, $80.  The first picture looks cracked, but it's not. It's a reflection of my wife's Fusion.
If the $60 LH housing sells first, the nicer one becomes unavailable (gotta have lights on the car, afterall).XX

Ah, my nemesis...

The two on my car now have a crack and some internal fracturing. I have a pair in good shape I received, but the shipper didn't package them correctly and one snapped. I have another two in a box in good condition, but dirty. Not badly faded. I also have a NOS one I purchased probably over 5 years ago, in whichever side is the more common. I also have I believe three NOS fog lamps, which at this point  I'm guessing I'll never use. Headlights were used a short while, being NOS, until I did a HID retrofit. You never know when you might need some. The tails I can't see easy to reproduce so they make the most sense to d. The outer lens is really all that matters...

Then I have the two tails that I've refinished and used in my LED retrofit. That project is just waiting for me to mate the front pieces up with the back, and install the backup lamp LEDs.

On that note, since there are some aftermarket front lights showing up, I'm hoping we start seeing something for the tails of both T-Birds and Cougars. Until then, people should be buying these up.

Foe, I ended up just pulling apart the set I have, and getting started on them. They are gonna be a slow workbench project for me. Thanks away, and GL with the sale.

Seek, don't worry I will only d around 10 nice sets before I stop. I have limited storage space here, and loads of parts already. I need to start stocking up on nice rust-free body parts, like doors, fenders, etc, while they can still be found.

Yeah, I don't think I need anymore for personal ding. If anything, I'd like to find a way to make new outer lenses. Not a direct replacement, but lenses that I can use for my own modified lights. If I can do that, I won't care about the OEM parts. I can vacuum form - I do not have the means to cast new pieces, especially bubble free ones.

how in the hell do  you keep your bumper so black?

The original owner had had some body repair done in the last 4 years, and also, she kept it in a garage.

Yeah, many years ago mine was wearing through. Some sanding, primer, and paint/clearcoat later, it stayed glossy and black for years until I repainted the car. Since it's black, probably one of the easier body work items to perform.
