1988 Sports had black window trim, buttstuffog clusters, floor shifters and the basic style door panels.

Is it possible yours is an '87, or an LX 5.0 Bird?

Here's the door jamb tag of mine, it's a Sport. Notice the 1FABP61.....that 61 is the designator for a Sport. ;)

Mine is a 88 for sure it could be an lx. What's the difference Between
n the lx and the sport?

It has power seats and mirrors if that means anything and a didgital dash

Look at the VIN, the 61 is what's important, but AFAIK ALL '88 Sport had a buttstuffog cluster...

The VIN will, as Tom stated make or break it being a Sport, but with the digi cluster and the chrome trim, I'd that there's 99% chance it's a Base or an LX Bird. Nothing to be ashamed of though, you still have the 5.0. The only thing you're lacking from a Sport is the buttstuffog cluster, 10 inch rear drum brakes, and a 2.73 limited slip rear.

I thought it was 3.08 for 87 on a 7.5" and for 88 3.08 on a 8.8"...

No Sport ever had an 8.8 rear factory...some '88 XR7s got 'em though, with the 3.08 gear, I believe. No matter, a 3.08 is hardly better than a 2.73 lol.

The bigger brakes and the limited slip diff would be the better things, IMO. With the 10" drums, it's easy to do a 5 lug drum rear and keep your existing brake parts, except for obviously the new drums for 5 instead of 4 lugs.

Not at all taking away from OP's car...he's got a nice one, and whether or not it's technically a Sport isn't relevant...he's got the 5.0, so he's got all the foundation he needs for a nice build, or even keep it stockish and have a nice cruiser.

Myself, I'm on the hunt for a Tbird or Cougar, just to drive. Must be an '88, I don't even care what engine. As long as it runs, I can deal with the rest.

Its a nice bird...I did not know about the 88 sport not having the 8.8"  why would ford only put the 8.8 in half of the 1988 XR7???

The same reason Ford never gave the the Fox bodied cats and birds the 5.0 HO motor from the factory..It boggles the mind

Urban legend has it that a prototype Bird with a HO outperformed a HO Mustang of the day, so Ford never let it see the light of day.  Probably not true, but a good story none-the-less!  Probably more to do with the fact the Bird/Cats were built in different plants than Mustangs and the logistics of shipping engines. The same could be said for the ridiculous double-Y exhaust the 5.0 Birds/Cats got vs. the true-dual H of the Mustangs.  You would think the economy of uniform parts would have manifested itself in this area. In the end, a discussion 25 years too late...........

I think the real reason was if the Thunderbird/Cougar got a 5.0 HO from the factory they would be faster than a Lincoln Mark VII with a 5.0 HO. This would kind of make the Mark VII not worth the extra money ;).

Nice Thunderbird :).

If you have a 5.0 car you more than likely have 10" drums in the rear. All 87-88 5.0 cars I've seen have 10" drums. Only the 3.8 cars got the 9" drums, at least around my area.
88 Thunderbird LX: 306, Edelbrock Performer heads, Comp 266HR cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, bunch of other stuff.
