dropped the TC off today for some work

my 154k mile 88 TC, leaks oil SOOO bad.  i dropped it off today to get a new oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and torque converter seal installed. i have a speedi sleeve for the crank on standby if its grooved.  anything else i should have them seal while they are down there?

hell man,, might as well have them gently roll in the main / rod bearings.  your talking about 50$ in parts i would guess.
it would be a sin not to do that with the pan off.

have them double check the bevel on your oil pan bolts, i know my 351 has two strips of steel along the oil pan where the bolts go , this way the bolt heads never touch the pan.
I usually lay the oil pan down and use a ball pin hammer to bevel the oil pan holes the other direction.

i dont own a 2.3 but if i did, there would be no way in hell id have the pan off and not do rod/main bearings.  they should be able to loosen things  up and make room to slide them in.

well, they worked on it today. you CAN do the oil pan gasket with the engine in the car, if you unbolt the rack and pinion, there is enough room to swap the pan gasket. I put on a stiff-rail felpro. i always excellent oil pressure, so i didnt bother with the bearings, but thanks for the tip. if i had opted to do the bearings, the motor would just about have to come out.              While in there i installed a new rear main seal, no noticeable groove in the crank so no sleeve needed. also changed the torque convertor seal. the only other thing i can see may be leaking down there, is the oild cooler, maybe an oring between that and the block. its discontinued from ford, any other ideas how to fix that?

Remove it it does nothing anyway. Install a standard FL1 and call it a day. use synthetic oil and change it out every 2500 miles. removing the pan is not a simple job and i always pull the engine when doing a pan gasket. just me i am nuts any way!!!

so just loop the two heater hoses together iff you remove the cooler?  is there a different filter thread mount i would need to install?

Nope, once you remove the old "Oil Cooler" adapter by unscrewing it from the block, the FL1A Filter will screw right on, and fit in the space perfectly. The "Oil Cooler" in the 2.3T setup, is actually meant for heating the oil up to operating temp faster during cold starts, not to actually cool the oil down.

ok,  but what to do with the hoses? join them at the cooler or bypass them elsewhere?

Bypass. One of them goes into the Lower Intake water port from the oil cooler adapter, so once the cooler is gone, you will be connecting the heater tube that loops around the back of the head directly to the water port on the bottom of the lower intake.

You can also install a Coolant Blockoff Gasket/Spacer between the Head and Lower Intake, to get rid of that feed point completely if you want. Then you can eliminate that tube going around the back of the head entirely, weld/close it off, and then have far less fail points in your cooling setup. You will have to relocate the ECT inline with the heater hose, if you go that route though. I have mine setup this way, and the Upper/Lower Intake stays much cooler without coolant heating it up.

so far no leaks! picked it up today, but i have a bigger issue, either they didnt put enough ATF back in, or the tv cable is not adjusted right. it wont upshift, i have to keep moving the shifter through the detents to shift.    taking it back tomorrow....
