Hmmm...I've not seen that since I blew out a few of those myself. But in my case, I had either a faulty or the wrong type of oil pump. Upon a cold startup, the first semi-mashing of the gas pedal resulted in this same situation. Changed the pump, never had a problem again.

Based upon that, I would guess the issue might lie in the crankcase somewhere...oil pump, pickup clogged, etc.
Something seems to be building up pressure and finding the weakest point to release--in this case, the filter.
Hope you were using at least a synthetic blend...

this engine in my opinion is about worn out.  I plan to build another over the winter/spring and get the car together again.  As far as the oil, I have been having a problem with pressure at operating temp. I have been using a 15-40 oil and I dont know if this would of caused this to happen or not but at this point with this engine I really dont care.

i have never, ever seen a fl-1a have a failure like that. i believe there is another issue. i could totally understand if that was a fram. but not a motorcraft/purolater.

Well the thing is, this was on a cold start up.  Otherwise....  the car has normal oil pressure

IIRC, it takes 200-300PSI over normal to unroll the seam on an oil filter. (Useless knowledge from my auto parts days...lol)
