Sudden large transmission fluid leak...

Well, all was well for 3 full days after my fuel pump job. I guess that's one way of looking at it...

Now, when I pulled up to my house I had a trail of transmission fluid down the street and a big (about 4") puddle underneith (after about 2 minutes of sitting turned off). Same deal when I pulled in the garage, 4" puddle.

I stuck my head under there and it looks to be coming out between the engine and transmission. Any ideas? This is on my 85 2.3t auto by the way. All stock.

I guess I overreacted... I finally got around to taking my car to the transmission shop. I checked the fluid, and only about a quart was missing...? I topped it off, and drove it around and it won't leak a drop. I took it to the transmission shop anyway, heck, I already had an appointment. They checked it out and said there is no sign of a front seal leak. Just the pan bolts are slightly loose and there was some seepage at the gasket (and a leak I already knew about on one of the cooler lines up by the radiator). So I had them go ahead and do a fluid/filter change, replace the gasket and the cooler lines.

Soooo, what the heck? The stain is still in the street, and all over my garage floor. DooDeDooDoo (twilight zone...). I mean, I am happy to not have to pay for a front seal job, but that leak was pretty severe, and now nothing?

I have personally seen the exact same thing happen before and as Dan B. said,  it's the front main seal.  My brother and I were coming home from a fishing trip.  We were only on the highway a couple of minutes and he says"What the f_ _k!  Is that coming from us?"  I looked in the mirror and there's a blue smoke trail behind us.  He pulled over off the highway and I get out to look and there's a 8in puddle under the transmission.  Son of a...  as we are two hours from home.  Checked the fluid and it was alright so I told him to just drive.  As long as he kept it under 65mph we were alright but as soon as he went over that it would start spewing again.  From past experience I'm going with Dan B.  front main seal.

The transmission shop guys said that the inside of the bell housing didn't show any signs of a leak. It has been 3 weeks since it happened, it could have dried up I suppose. Don't jinx me now, heh. I've been driving it all afternoon, and not so much as a drop has been found under it so far...
