Weird Problem with head unit

My friend and I were trying to install a pioneer premere head unit into his 92 tbird. Well, we wired it up pretty well (illumination and dimmer ground were left unwired and we werent sure where to connect them) and plugged it in and it worked for about 20 seconds. Then i turned it all the way up and it shut off. Now, not even the stock deck will turn on and his dash lights wont work without a deck in. I checked the fuse in the deck and the fuse under the driver's side and they seemed fine. Not sure what the problem could be. ANy help would be appreciated

check all the fuses. you dont use the illumination and dimmer wires. is the head unit new? grounded correctly? did you use a pigtail harness to wire into the pioneers headunit and plug into the factory harness or did you cut the factory harness?

i used a pigtail harness and plugged into the factories. Its a used premiere but is supposedly in good condition. fuses look good.

You need to run a ground wire off of the pioneer harness to the dash frame somewhere. Also double check that the harnesses wire colors match up and that the harness plugs for both the stereo and car match. I'd double check the fuses under the dash again, in all likely hood one is blown, it may be slight but it's highly likely that is i'd doubt that you burned through the fusible link. But take a good long look at everything and you'll prolly come up with the problem.

sounds more like the radio "could" be toast. double check all your connections. ive hooked up about 6 of these (all i use is pioneer and premeer) and have never had a problem. when you are wireing stuff up, please disconnect the battery. check all the fuses.

did you wire this up common ground? not sure how the 92s were and what wireing and radio options they had.

Hey Sonic,
I just installed a new head unit in my 89' Cougar LS and had the same problem. Go under the hood to where the fuse box is and open the plastic cover. Look at the box while standing on the driver side of the car and at the 12-o'clock position you will see a 5 amp fuse for the memory. Check to see if this 5 amp fuse is blown and if so replace it and everything should work fine. I have blown mine twice since I installed the new unit. I'm about to install a new hi-output alternator and a new battery. Both of these must be done at the same time if the alternator requires it, some do so check first. Peace.

I just installed a new JVC head unit and I had no problems. but everytime I install a stereo I also install a larger guage of wire for speakers/ground just to be on the safe side and to know that everything is new and good and wont short out.
