1st gear roughness

So I own a 1997 Xr7 Cougar and in first gear it starts to idle rough when standing still with the brake applied and also sometime misses when slowly taking off in 1st. I have also noticed a small but audible tick on the left side of the block head on top of the rocker arms? I've tried finding the exact source but have come up with nothing so far. Any ideas anyone?

We deal with 80-88 Thunderbirds and Cougars which are built on the "Fox" platform. A 1997 Cougar is built on the "MN-12" platform. You would have better luck asking what's wrong with you car here: http://www.tccoa.com/ . These guys deal with the 89-97 Thunderbirds and Cougars built on the MN-12 platform.
88 Thunderbird LX: 306, Edelbrock Performer heads, Comp 266HR cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, bunch of other stuff.
