Dan,
The intake tube is just out of sight inside the fender toward the front.  No additional filter here.  If u pull off the air box (2 screws on top), you'll see the silencer in the fender.  That's all it is.  Remove the 3 nuts holding it in the fender, and if it is like mine, be prepared to fight a little to get it out.  Pulling that assembly changes the smallest diameter from about 3 1/2" at the intake end to the full opening size in the fender hole.  It definitely helps the sound, and gave me an apparent boost in mpg and power.  I still have mine after I tore it apart into 2 sections.  Will post pic's tomorrow.
