i thought everyone knew the Johnson Rod gag. sorry. Maybe it is a regional thing. I didn't mean to be a wise ass. I've heard the following exchange countless times: "I can't figure out what's wrong with this engine." "no? did you try adjusting the johnson rod?" -It's a ficticious part that is critical to the function of every machine known to man. Or-as in my case- for several years when I was little I thought the dip stick was called the johnson rod.........cause my father tricked me. He'd always refer to the dipstick as the johnson rod.

I can pull my motor and t5 tranny out with a carb plate and tight on the chain on the lift arm. Had a whole 1/2" of room. Now that the hoods painted it will just be removed in the future. And when the motor comes out again it will be a two piece deal. I scratched a freshly painted tunnel in the engine bay with the shifter on the new TKO tranny :( Live and learn. And next time Ill ask for help.

I pulled. Engine and tranny and placed back in with the hood and everything bolted on. Left the ac and ps bolted together hanging off the battery though. That was on a 87 bird, 5.0 aod.

Don't forget to pull the rad also, or you will likely poke a hole in it!! Yeah you can take the trans out attached to the motor, but it can be tricky not to wreck stuff.

Hey Vinnietbird, did you do the mass air conversion yourself? Got some nice stuff on your motor everything I'd put on!! Gonna try the new BBK intake though, not the single plane, but the SS-R open plenum version.

I've always pulled engines and trans. together, unless it's in a 4x4 truck, then I leave the transmission/x-case in.

Take the shifter off (if T5), and sure drain tranny fluid beforehand...unless you don't mind a well lubed floor. (I mind.)
Radiator out, fan off, hood off, everything else left on engine, except for upper intake. Unbolt H pipe, headers stay on.
Easy stuff. I even left the starter wiring on until I had it past the fender, then disconnected it.
This was on my '88 Sport, btw.
