Nw to me 88 TC, Premium sound problem.

I just bought this car, and it had the premium stereo and EQ installed. The wiring harness in the car does not match the EQ, and digging around, I did not find any other speaker harnesses, that are sometimes hidden. I currenty get audio output, but it is not very loud.

Radio currently in the car:

EQ connector:

Extra Audio connector (besides the 2 attached to the head unit)

I doubt this is related, but found this harness with a melted wire, anyone know what it is?

Thanks for any info!

There is an amplifier in your trunk that is hidden behind a black cardboard panel.  It is mounted to a fold down silver basket-like shelve that is bolted behind the rear seats.  See if this is hooked up, or fried.

The extra connector you have there is the speaker connector for the non-premium sound harness.  In my cars (even the ones without premium sound) the EQ plug has been right behind the cubby/EQ, like in the following picture.

I have an extra factory amp (and live in Vegas) if you want to try to see if that fixes it.
1986 Mercury Cougar - 2.3T/T5 swap, TC brakes and suspension and rearend, 3" exhaust, 255 lph fuel pump, Stinger BOV, Gillis MBC @ 18 psi

Thanks for the info. I dug and could not find the eq harness. I'm pretty convinced someone went to the junkyard or something, and swapped out the premium head unit without the EQ, for the one designed for the EQ, and magically expected it to work :dunno:. The amp is there, and plugged in, so I imagine it has to work, or I wouldn't have any audio at all. I'll have to see if I can find the right Head unit that doesn't need the EQ, and see what happens.

I think (and I'm not 100% sure on this so somebody correct me if I am wrong) that the non eq cars had the bass/treble nobs on them, and didn't have the slider for the balance, it was also a . The head unit you have is the same that was in my 20th anny, with factory EQ, maybe somebody tried bypassing the factory EQ? And I *think* that you will still get sound without the factory EQ but it will be very dull and soft like you say,,,,

Going to be hitting up the pic a part this weekend, and see of I can find the right head unit. and some other odds and ends.
Anyone know if the head unit with all 4 controls are unique to the premium sound, or is it the same as any ford in those years with the standard head unit?

Ended up getting a head unit out of a non premium sound tbird. Plugged in, works perfectly! Comparing to the audio in the 06 fusion that I sold off, stock for stock, this one sounds better.
