Interior door handle doesn't open door, still unlocks it.

My '85 Elan has an odd quirk. The driver's side inside door handle doesn't open the door, i thought the rod or cable was broken/unhooked, but when i pulled it yesterday i noticed that it still unlocks the door. Outside door handle works fine. any ideas on the issue?

Maybe the plastic grommets are work=n or missing causing the handle to have just enough play that it won't open the door. Maybe a slightly bent rod.Every rod that fits somewhere goes into a plastic fitting.

yea, sounds like it's not pulling far enough to unlatch. I would also check the rods

Check the handle tightness. I've ran into them working loose just a little and the handle rotates on its mount just a little. That is enough to make it not want to open. To fix it I install the bolt using the blue loc tight that holds it and doesn't seem to work loose over time.

Hope this helps
