steering wheel quick release February 01, 2011, 03:28:40 AM I'll need a quick release wheel but would like to keep the factory wheel if possible. Has anyone adapted a factory steering wheel with a quick release? Quote Selected
steering wheel quick release Reply #1 – February 01, 2011, 06:34:44 PM I think you are gonna have a tough time finding anyone who has adapted a stock wheel for quick release. I do OTOH, think it could be done if you wanted it bad enough. Are you gonna try to keep the functionality of the horn and cruise buttons??? Quote Selected
steering wheel quick release Reply #2 – February 01, 2011, 08:16:02 PM Yes, the idea is to keep the horn and cruise buttons, esp the cruise. I'd prefer a stock look if possible, although there is an opportunity for some ghey ricer action by installing some cheap red moment switches and relabeling (ON/OFF NAWZ/MISE NAWZ). Thing is, I try to avoid rice, even for the irony. Quote Selected
steering wheel quick release Reply #3 – February 01, 2011, 08:28:26 PM I think it would be simplest to relocate the cruise buttons to the dash, then you only hafta mess with the horn portions of the slider contacts. If you can fab up the needed components to connect the stock wheel to a quick release hub, I'd imagine you could find a way to attach a Grant horn adapter kit to the quick release hub as well to keep the horn functional.seems overly complicated for a steering wheel, but the heart wants what the heart wants.Me, I chose a cheap APC wheel, ditched the horn button, built a low profile adapter cause the APC one was a foot tall, attached that to a Grant hub adapter and ditched the horn(cruise was already long gone).I was thinking about gettin a coil chord and a red momentary button to fix my horn till you called it ricey... steering wheel quick release Reply #4 – February 01, 2011, 08:41:21 PM Oops, sorry... er uh, I meant 'racey'.Another way to keep the buttons without the factory hub connections would be to use a wireless transmitter on the wheel, with receiver in/on the dash or column. Quote Selected

steering wheel quick release Reply #9 – February 13, 2011, 01:07:56 AM no,, i just dont know about this stuff, sounds cool. They use them on funny cars or even nascar i think but those guys are always turning left or not at all. It just feels odd for me to think i could be in a curve then the wheel comes off in my hands.its like....... oh,,, a portable safe, doesnt make any sense. Quote Selected
steering wheel quick release Reply #10 – February 13, 2011, 10:29:34 PM Several of the cars in the NASA American Iron series have quick disconnect steering wheels and all they do is turn left and right for up to (4) 20 minute sessions a day with some of the final races being 40 minutes. Granted none of those cars keep the horn let alone the cruise controls. I have seen a couple of the guys keep a stock Fox Mustang or SN95 steering wheel with a quick disconnect but the air bag is long gone so it makes it a bit easier. The biggest reason for the quick disconnect is the getting in and out of the car with the cage. Other than than the skinny guys usually don't have one.Darren Quote Selected
