Converting Wipers to Delay Wipers

Has anyone swapped the factory delay wiper setup into a car that didn't have it from the factory? It was snowing lightly yesterday and without the delay wipers it is such a pain.

My parts car has the complete delay system in it, my DD doesn't. Thinking it might be worth it to swap it over, but I don't know how complicated it might be.

I know someone else posted on it not that long ago, but I can't find the thread. How complicated is it? Procedure anywhere? Hoping it might be a nice weekend project, even if it is freezing outside.

I did that swap in a Fox Capri. Should be the same thing. If I remember correctly, the motor, switch and delay box all need to be exchanged. Well, there isn't a delay box in the standard car, so that really isn't exchanged. I think all the plugs were the same, but I can't remember for sure. From what I recall, it was pretty easy.

Can anyone else comment on this? Anyone else done the swap? I searched here and coolcats.net, but I couldn't seem to find an instruction manual so to speak. I wouldn't even know what the delay box looks like. If it is a plug and play thing, I might start tearing the parts car apart this weekend. Hmm... Potential potential.

K, that's all pretty much true. Wiper motor, delay switch on the column, and the wiper motor governor which goes under the dash, to the left of the column, and above the fuse panel. There is a metal brace up there where the governor attaches. Easiest way to get to it is to drop the column. The governor has two pigtails: one goes to the motor, the other to the switch. It's all pretty much plug-and-play.

Just the same, be sure to keep your non-delay switch and motor because, believe it or not, they're pretty uncommon. Delay wipers was a very popular option for these cars and usually part of a PEP package.

Interesting, thank you Eric.

Now on a side note, if windshield wipers do not park, does that mean the motor is junk? I removed the wiper motor and arms from the parts car a while back, they are sitting inside car. But the wipers on my car no longer park themselves, I have to push the wipers down a couple of inches to the base of the window.

Which motor doesn't park? If it's the non-delay motor, don't worry about it because you need to replace it with a delay motor any way. Glad Eric chimed in. I haven't actually done this on my Cougar since it already had delay wipers, but I figured it was the same as the Capri.

I'm glad too. I guess what my question really should have been was; is it the motor being bad that doesn't part the wipers or is it something else. But from the above statement I feel it's the wiper motor.

Thanks Eric. I will have to examine that, maybe I'll try to fix that, just so it's done, before I do the swap. It's all in the fun of learning to do something new, right? :)
