You sunburned yet?

Crystal, ya had to go and say "rub it in" over the sunburn, so here I go! :D

This is actually my second or third decent sunburn from car stuff.. but this is the one where I'm feeling like most of my upper body is on fire. Probably a good thing there's a few aloe plants growing out front. Going to need 'em this year.

So, since it seems that your first car-work sunburn is your signal that the shiznitty weather is finally over and summer's on its way, let's hear it when ya get it. (or if you got it already)

just a question- the aloe plants you have out front how do you use them???. I have had some badass sunburn before so bad i had to sit in front of a fan all day, and usually apply aloe lotion every few hours.

I haven't actually used them in many years.. but from what I recall the last time we did use 'em, you just cut one of the leaves off (they're really thick cactus-like plants) and use the sap/juice/whatever. It's almost like a paste.

They're almost growing wild out there. They've even sent up flower stalks like 2' tall.

In all honesty, I would probably be better off using some artificial product that isn't so sticky and pasty and doesn't make my arm hair feel like a tangled mat of filth on my arms. But I might try it once just to see if natural works well.

I got sunburned about three weeks ago, the first time I ever got sunburned in April. In typical Nova Scotia fashion, it was 70 degrees that day. It snowed the next.

This is my grandmother's recipe for sunburn.  As soon as you can after you get burned (no more than an hour or two after), wash any oil off your skin & apply vinegar with a cloth.  Rub it in a bit & leave it on for 20 minutes or so, longer if you don't mind smelling like salad.  It won't do squat for the peeling, but it won't hurt nearly as badly.  The sooner you apply the vinegar, the less it hurts.  Milk also works, but you'll smell like sour milk for a day or two.

I have red hair and fair skin so I've had my share of nasty sunburns over the past 25 years.  One thing that stops the pain, at least temporarily so you can sleep, is aspirin.  It makes the burning go away.  Also, there is some spray stuff called Solar-Cain that really helps to heal it.

I ended up using some aloe product from my mother's wound-care supplies for work. Worked like a charm, but now every time I go outside the sunlight really makes me feel uncomfortable on the burn spots.. even with sunscreen on. No big deal, though. The sunburns come with sort of a satisfied feeling of having accomplished something while I got 'em.. so each new little burn is a reminder of progress. :D

outside of the arms and top of the head this weekend. lots of sun. heres a trick i learned from a florida native when i frist moved here. on the day you get the sun, just rinse in the shower no soap on the exposed skin. i hope you weren't at a clothing optional beach! the pain won't be as bad or as long lasting. Tried the vinegar thing mentioned a few post back. didn't work for me hurt for days but i didn't peel.

You want sunburn stories? I got yer sunburn story right here:

Years ago (prolly around 1994) I had the mother of all sunburns. My ex girlfriend and I had gone to Lake George, NY, for a little vacation. The first day we were there we went to the Great Escape fun park, and despite the pouring, steady rain we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Sure, it was raining, but it was very warm and the rain kept the crowds away - we had the place to ourselves.

The next day, the sun came out. It was well over 100 degrees and the cold front that finished up the rain with a spectacular thunderstorm also left the air very dry and clear. It was much brighter, and much hotter, that we were used to in our Maritime climate. We went to a water park, where we spent the day in the searing sun and cool water. The water washed our sunscreen off, of course, and to make things worse I fell asleep in the wave pool. I have the ability to float on my back, and in the wave pool this ability combined with the "Rock-a-bye-baby" effect of the waves had me sleeping almost immediately. I slept for about an hour, in the direct sunlight, with the water acting as a magnifying glass. When I woke up I noticed that I was beet red from sunburn but didn't think much of it.

That evening, as the sun set, the pain started, and the heat stroke set in. I was shivering in 90-degree heat. Later on that evening the blisters started appearing, and I moved to the car to try to sleep (the tent was too cold, even though this was a very warm night). I did not sleep a wink; instead I shivered in excruciating pain and listened to a radio station that played two songs from every artist. The next morning the blisters were literally the size of eggs and I felt very sick. We decided I had to get to hospital, and we also decided that it was gonna be a free, Canadian hospital, so we lit out for home with her driving. I had to sit in the passenger's seat with towels covering me (the sun really, REALLY hurt). We spent a night in a hotel in Bangor where I ruined the sheets in the bed (the blisters had started to leak) and then finally made our way back into Canada via St. Stephen, NB. Around about Susshag, NB, the ignition switch in the car caught fire ('91 T-Bird), so I was stranded 500 miles from home. Another night in a hotel, another set of ruined sheets.

Finally we made it home, and I went straight to the hospital. The doctor that examined me gave me a proper dosage of shiznit as well as an impromptu lesson on skin cancer, but did not admit me because the blisters were starting to heal. I had, essentially, given myself second degree burns over the entire upper half of my body plus my legs. He told me to watch out for changes, gave me some antibiotics and painkillers, and sent me home (with the instructions to stay at home, out of the sun, and to not get wet because it could cause an infection). The blisters did gradually shrink and heal up, but I was left looking like a mess. Then I molted. I got in the shower a few days later (I was REALLY humming by now, as you can imagine) and the blisters that had previously emptied soaked up the water and filled up - it looked like I had dozens of "cups" of water all over me. I freaked out and started grabbing - I literally skinned myself in the shower. The skin that was left behind was tender to the touch, but it looked OK. A few days later I peeled again (this time naturally, like any sunburn) and after that I was fine. No scars. In fact, oddly enough, I didn't even get a tan for my trouble. I was just as ghostly white after the sunburn as I was before.

One other thing I learned from this episode:

Never, EVER use "Solarcain" on a sunburn with blisters. They warn against this on the can, and I can tell you quite confidently that they did not waste their ink. PAIN!!!!!

Sounds awfully familiar.  Oh yeah!  Happens to me all the time!

Carm -- Why is it that when anyone has a story about sunburn or hitting a deer or whatever, that you have always had a worse sunburn or hit a bigger deer?  :giggle:
