Clueless.

Hey all, I'm not new to this site but this is my first time posting.  I scored a sweet 20th Anniversary with 26K miles on it last August and I'm trying to keep the car as original as I can.  It came with the factory AM/FM cassette player (what the heck's a cassette?) and I want to pull the Pioneer Mp3 player out of my other '87 Cougar and make it work WITH the premium sound, amp and EQ.  I got the wiring harness but I'm being told that I'll have to bypass the amp and that the EQ will no longer work.  I don't want a dead component in the dash but I also don't want to replace the entire sound system.  I'm about as clueless as one can get with electronics so any help here would be appreciated.  I'm getting very frustrated very quickly as summer's coming and I want my tunes.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

You could hack up a set of rca cables and wire them into the adapter harness you get from the store. In you harness cars harness there will be 3 wire not sure on the colors but 1 is a ground and the other 2 are leads to the speakers. I did this on my 88 bird and it worked good.

This may help also.

If I can remember when I get home I will take some pics of the harness and post them.

Thanks for the help guys.  Turns out the harness I need is already hooked up to the after market deck in my other Cougar.  Everything popped into place and I thought I was ready to go but as soon as I turned the ignition key I got power, some strange led sounds (nothing remotely close to music) and a soft hiss but no actual sound.  The EQ powers up too but I can't tell if it's actually working with the new deck because there's no music.  I may take it to a local installations place to see if they have any ideas...unless you guys have any suggestions.

Thanks again for the help,

I'm surprised Carm hasn't chimed in on this one.  He has put together an excellent website with all the information and diagrams you will need to have in order to wire an aftermarket head unit and amp to your factory premium sound with EQ.  Check it out:

My car came with premium sound without the EQ.  I was able to remove the factory amp, wire in a four channel aftermarket one and a Pioneer head unit, and use all the factory speaker wires.

Thanks, Jim!  I printed up the diagram and I'll go with it this weekend.  I'll post back with the results.  And after I get the car buffed out I'll put some pics up and get myself more involved here.
