Stinkin AC wont work!!

I installed a new rebuilt compressor, and new 134 adapters today. the first can of freon went in easy. The 2nd can wouldn't go in and the AC clutch would not kick on. Its doing exactly what the old compressor did! I noticed upon removal that the one I removed had new O rings, so the owner before must have replaced the compressor at some point too. Is it a possibility that the AC switches are not functioning. It does take me several presses to make the push button functions work. Whats the darn fix?!! Its hot out here!

Fuses first, relays, and have you ever had the dash out or heater core out?...make sure all your connectors are plugged back in.
Sounds like you have the EATC?
Those have a lot more stuff. Have an EVTM? I can scan some pages if yours is an '88...

Fuses first, relays, .

Im jumping on also.:shakeass:

Mine quit working recently also.  Was working great, now just blows hot air.  I dont notice the compressor kick on, when I turn the switch.

Where/what  are the above mentioned fuses and relays.  I didnt see mention of them in the owners manual.

Please expand on this pressure switch. Where is it and how do I control it?

To control the pressure switch is to unplug and jump the connection between the two wires in the plug. That tells the system that is see's enough pressure to turn on the compressor. I would only do that for a moment or so to make sure the clutch is working on the car. That is really a safety to keep the compressor from running as to help save it from killing its self. Also instead of check fuses and such grab a Meter and test and find out if you are getting power at the clutch connector when your ac is on and the pressure switch jumped.

Where is the pressure switch located?

I jumped the pressure switch as you suggested and the ac and fan kicked on. So I tried to adjust the switch first and nothing, so I went to my garage and pulled another switch off another canister I had. It was so easy to take off. I was like taken a cap of a valve stem-no tools required. It installed just as fast as I took it off the other canister. Now after I installed the other switch, the fan would kick on and A/C clutch would engage, but intermittently. So I backed the adjustment screw off(counter clockwise) one turn at a time, and by the second turn the fan and clutch were engaging correctly. This allowed me to put the 2 cans of freon in, and now I have cold A/C again!! LIFE IS GOOD!!!

Pics of the switch just in case someone else has this problem..

So I bought a new compressor for nothing, but at least I have a good back up unit when the time comes I guess. Thanks HCOR for your suggestion

Now that I have the freon in the system, should I tighten the switch screw back 2 turns or just leave it alone?

Unless the clutch coil is open(easily checked with a ohm meter), replacing a compressor because it won't cycle is NEVER going to fix your problem... Low pressure switches are a fairly common failure...

Do I have turn the screw back in two turns now or is it fine where it is?

What type of gauges are you going off of? Any?

I'm not sure how many turns in will lower the cutout to a usable pressure but stock, my factory and replacement switches were both set to 25psi which will still work fine for r134. Technically, to get the same temperature cutout as with r12, you'd want to set it to 22psi. 22psi would get the evaporator about 4 degrees Fahrenheit cooler (25 degrees rather than 29 degrees) before the low pressure switch fires.

Unless someone speakers up about the turns (and even then, that's a bad way to go about setting it as you have no idea what it's set to right now), I'd just leave it as is. You can always come back and adjust it later if you get some a/c gauges and by then, some refrigerant may have leaked out enough to actually hit that lower pressure on a warmer day.

Since it is just a valve stem, can I use a regular tire pressure gauge to check it?

Ummm...no. I don't remember what the r12 fittings were but you should be running the r134 conversion ones that are much larger and thread onto the r12 fittings.

With a static pressure of like 70-80psi, I doubt you would get very far with a tire gauge and something like that would be a real health hazard - it's an injury waiting to happen.
