265/50/14's on rear??

Will these fit an 87 Cougar rear? They are special order, and once they are ordered, too late to change. I'm a little leary, but the fella at Firestone said they would fit with no problem. I was thinking maybe 245/60/14 would be about the widest I could go.

Same scenario with 15" wheels also. 265/50/15 or 245/60/15?

If anyone's running this wide now, I would appreciate the feedback, positive or negative.

Dave

I would think they would fit. I have 245/50zr16 and there is alot of room left. But how wide are your rims I wouldn't want to put a 265/50 on a 7in rim. That would be kinda dangerous. The tire dealer I worked for had a few book we read and they all said in a 50 series tire the widest you could go it 245 on the stock 7in rim.

Someone else here might have some different input. I think I read some where on here that someone had gone with the over sized tire on the stock rims and it made the back end feel loose, because the tire flexed back and forth when cornering.

If your wheel is only 7" wide..do not go with the 265's.  The 245's are a bit big too, but will work.  They still will be a bit squirmy unless the sidewalls are really stiff.

you can put wide tires on your rims all you want, but itll naturally arch the tread section, and make your tires act as if theyre narrow still
It's Gumby's fault.

I thought 7" wheels were too narrow also. Not what the guy at Firestone said. I will plan on 245 or less.

Thanks,
