its sure worth a try, I have seen a 455 rocket run on a 2 barrel carb and it ran like the name it was given  if it doesnt run like you expect you could always throw on a 4 barrel cintake and carb.  check with the guys over at http://sbftech.com/index.php

Hum old ped out sounding motor VS NEW Motor with same old electronics. I would think it would be an all around improvement over what you have. Now do I think you slap it in there and it be a ROCKET not so sure. With all those factory 84 CFI parts thinking you will be little better than Stock 84 setup. Now with some tweaking and tuning might dial it up just depends how much time, effort and money you want to throw at it. Think of this why not find the Computer, wire harness, intake, fuel rails injectors out of a newer Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0. Then you could step it up to the much better EFI plus in those newer one they basicly had a Cobra setup in them. Needed all the power they could muster with meeting emissions in those big old rigs.

how would a wiring harness from an explorer work with whats in an 84 bird?  why not convert everything over to a carb setup for lack of efi wiring?

That's why I dig the 83-88 cars. That's what I would do were it my deal.

1. You have to gut the 84 Engine harness and EEC setup. Then hardwire the newer EEC hareness setup into the Car not all that hard my friend. All you need to it baiscly is power and ground. Then Reuse or by new sensor for the factory 84 gauges. Splice those onto the new motor. Hardest part would be if you have a tach atleast for me. Where to get signal to run it? Might have to upgrade to spring lock fuel line connectors too.
2. While High HP carb motors are cool in my opinion High HP EFI are even cooler! Nice and dependable yet can rip ass Hot,cold motor or weather or altitude all without making any adjustments. Carb you need to dial it in depending on these condition. EFI the puter does that for you.

3. Its there car they can do it how ever they want. This is just my opinion.
