I've got a question guys... June 12, 2010, 08:40:13 AM The alternator on my 87 Sport needed to be replaced, so I decided to do the 3G upgrade right? Well, I'm almost done wiring in my 3G, but there's something I'm not sure about. JCassity's instructions in the Sticky say that there's a yellow wire that runs from the hot terminal of the starter solenoid to a splice where. Your two headlight wires also are connected. His instructions say to remove that yellow wire from the starter solenoid's hot terminal and to cut the two headlight wires and to connect them to the starter solenoid's hot terminal.Well, I looked and my car doesn't have a yellow wire going to the starter solenoid. To help keep this simple, I'm planning on not removing any wires from the starter solenoid. My plan is to run a 4 gauge wire from the "Batt" terminal of the alternator, connect the other end to a fuse block I installed next to the starter solenoid and then run another 4 gauge wire from the other end of the fuse block, to the hot terminal on the starter solenoid. So that I can leave the old black wire with an orange stripe in the car, can I cut it right before where it split into two black/orange stripe wires (just before the 2G alternator plug) and connect that single black/ orange stripe wire to one end of the fuse block I'm installing? From reading all the threads on this, I think wiring the car this way would work. I just want to make sure I wouldn't be screwing things up by wiring the car this way. I hate asking about a question that's been beaten to death so much, but I also don't want to let the smoke out of my ride. Thanks for any feedback on this. Quote Selected
I've got a question guys... Reply #1 – June 12, 2010, 04:27:01 PM The problem with these, one set of instructions fits all, is it's only 100% accurate for the vehicle the writer was working on.You are right you don't have a yellow wire on your starter relay. You should have a BK/O wire. You want to remove Fuse Link A and the wiring on the alternator side of it from the circuit, while leaving Fuse Links B&C connected to the starter relay.Looks like the easiest way is to cut the BK/O wire after splice S492 and tape it up. Then cut the Y/W wire with enough length to reach where it has to go on the 3G.The Y/W wire on the regulator A terminal will go to the 3G output along with the 6 AWG wire. The W/BK wire on the regulator S terminal will go to the 3G Stator output. Here is the EVTM diagram for your car: Quote Selected
I've got a question guys... Reply #2 – June 12, 2010, 05:03:26 PM On mine I just added a piece of approx #10 wire from the donor Taurus, from the alt output to the batt connection on the solenoid... I used a 60A fuse in line, as it's in parallel with the Birds original wiring that's still in use... Quote Selected
I've got a question guys... Reply #3 – June 12, 2010, 09:12:47 PM Hey Softtouch. Thanks for posting that schematic from your EVTM. I have an EVTM for 88 T Birds, but I don't have one yet for 87's. That was just what I needed.I knew 87's have different wiring than 88's. It's just my luck that those wires I was dealing with are some of the wires that were changes from 87, to 88.I thought about snagging a harness out of the boneyard and doing that Tom, but I think it's a safer bet running my own 4 gauge instead of using that smaller gauge wire Ford put on those cars. Thanks as always for your input though.Wow! That alternator throws some current! This is great! I'm so glad I did this. Quote Selected
