For anyone with a black magic fan...

If you live in a place where rust is an issue and you mess up the blade, just buy a whole new fan!

My fan broke loose yesterday and the studs for the stock fan chewed it up really good (I was so happy to find out the horrible vibration was just the fan though!). Anyway to try and save some cash I just bought a new blade seeing as everything else was good.

In theory the directions say loosen set screw and gently pull up on fan, then replace with the new one. Luckily I did this at the speed shop but the actuality of my replacement went like this:

1. Soak set screw with WD40.
2. After twisting included allen wrench use torch and then remove set screw.
3. Try to pull off fan and just laugh. Apply heat again, nothing...
4. Ignore directions and tap fan shaft with hammer, again, nothing
5. Tap shaft with hammer while applying upward pressure with pry bar, nothing
6. Take hacksaw and start cutting the metal holding the fan to the shaft, nothing
7. Continue cutting with hacksaw and try to widen gaps with hammer and chisel, nothing
8. Go out to the other shop and start grinding, try some more heat, nothing
9. Grind visible metal piece flush with plastic fan, nothing
10. Take cutoff wheel to fan and cut down through it, more prying, hammering and WD40, nothing
11. Finally manage to break the fan from the metal piece that attaches it to shaft, cut metal piece all the way through with cutoff wheel and beat off with hammer.
12. Take 10 minutes to install new blade on to shaft and then reinstall in car.

So this all took the better part of 2 hrs since I was trying to not kill the motor in the fan or bend the shaft and nock the fan off balance. Prior to this I tore down an 89 Mustang GT motor that I'm cleaning up and putting in my ranchero and that only took me like 1.5 hrs.

In conclusion, spend the extra money and just get a new fan... :flame:

I use a Taurus fan. From what I've read, the Taurus fan even flows more air, they are really cheap, and very accessible at any boneyard.I've been using mine for nearly two years and it has really kept the car cool.It did great last summer when it hit 117 degrees.HOT.The car did great even sitting in traffic.Just a thought, and way cheaper then an aftermarket fan.

Good plan, I've just been using that fan for a good 6+ years without issues so I figured rather than rewiring it'd be a piece of cake to switch out the blade...

I did the swap because the fan and 3G were free.Otherwise,I'd probably till be running the factory stuff.

wow... just wow... i thought the spring clip on my origional TC was a pain in the ass when i replaced the electric fan motor in that. come to think of it, i think the blades stuck to the shaft of that pretty good to, but that was a 20 year old car lol, not a new 6 year old fan

LOL, have you met my car the rot box? I love it to death but there's so much cancer spread through it that it's not even funny. For 10 years and almost 100k miles of my personal ownership though it's been pretty trouble free and I can't complain.

My tc on the other hand, we're more like sworn enemies but I so enjoy blowing it up all the time, lol :burnout:

I say fix the rot box, and get rid of the fighter. But that's my crazy opinion. :hick:

I had the passenger side strut tower break apart from the car and had to do an emergency repair on it. It was enough to throw the frame out of alignment. Now my shaved door handles are a pain (of course it's the drivers side door that suffered) my windshield is leaking, my radiator support is about half nonexistant, quarters, door bottoms, rockers are all going.

It's my first car and I love it but it's days are numbered once the ranchero gets its motor back and that should happen soon enough. It's stripped down and the parts going on are all sandblasted and in the process of being painted. It'll be a quick project at this point.

Sucks about the fan crystal!  I must say though, I have taurus fans on my truck and it keeps that cool.  It'll be a sad day when your gray bird bites the dust though :(  You should just megasquirt your TC so maybe it would run right then, lol.
