headliner material

hi
i need to replace the headliner in my 1984 cougar. i received a sample from a place called SMS auto fabrics in canby oregon
it is a very close match to the color i have which is called desert tan or something like that. has anyone  ever used this place? they seem very nice and knowledgable.  any other places i should look at?
they have been in business since 1977.

thanks

I pulled the headliner board from my car, took it to the local upholstery shop and they covered it for $35.00.I re-installed it myself. It cost me les for them to do it than for me to buy the material, the adhesive, and the time of doing it.

Something I need to do as well. Change the blue headliner that sags for gray. Bad thing is, mine's a moonroof. There's a place down here in Laclede that does vehicle upholstery...I'll take it down there after I get the doors and fenders back on and get an estimate.

Well, I'm guessing Vinnie's situation is the exception, rather than the rule in regards to price.

It's an inexpensive, easy project to accomplish.  Pretty much all the foam-backed headliner material is the same, and the only real trick is to get the proper adhesive.

Never use that Permatex spray adhesive in the blue can! When it heats up the adhesive turns to goo and seperates like that adhesive used on the back of most velcro.

I made the mistake of using that stuff to bond the vinyl on my airbag delete cover and it lifts. Live and learn!

I found the best stuff is that yellow weatherstrip adhesive, what I call yellow snot. I used that stuff to bond the power switch bezel into the Mustang shifter bezel and it is holding strong.  For headliners, I recommend the 3M stuff. It is usually marked on the can for bonding headliners and vinyl/leather trim. If it sprays out yellow in the can then it's the good stuff.

I've been told that JoAnn Fabrics carries the material.

SMS is very good, they had the correct parchment color vinyl top material for a couple 65Birds I restored.  I also needed to do the headliner on my sons 83 and was going to get the materials and do it myself untill I checked with the local upholstery shop. I did take them the backer board and it was right around $75. Its been 3 years now I think and it still looks like new. I took them a visor and had them match it and it came out perfect.
