The Bird let me down last night...

For the first time ever, when I went to start the car, it would not start. I'm housesitting at my parents' place and went to bring the car into the driveway (off the street) and it would crank but not fire. My first suspicion was the inertia switch, but it was not tripped. I checked for spark and had plenty, so I had a buddy crank while I pressed the fuel schrader valve. Bingo: No fuel. A few quick tests determined the fuel pump relay is not working. I jumpered the pink/black and yellow wires together and started the car just long enough to bring it into the yard.

Leave it to Ford to use a proprietary relay. Needless to say I will be cutting the connector off and installing a standard Bosch relay. I was almost hoping it was the fuel pump - it would've given the the perfect excuse to upgrade to a higher flow unit in preparation for the eventual HO upgrade :hick:

I HATE that stupid inertia switch.  Mine started going out and I could be going down the interstate at 80 mph and the car would just QUIT!  We couldn't figure out what was wrong until I parked in the carport one evening and hear a little 'sound' coming from the rear end ;-(  A couple of phone calls and a few message board posting later and we found out what it was ;-(  Thankfully, it was en easy fix but drove me batty for almost 6 months before it finally got stuck in the "on" position.

I would not so much lament a failure of a ~25-year-old part as much as I would praise the miracle that it functioned for so long. ;)
