Gas Tank Pump Retainer Ring (84 Cougar) April 01, 2010, 11:12:55 AM I have the shop manual, but no can't find a mention or a picture of what thegas tank pump retainer ring looks like. Before I start, I figure I will need a few specialty tools including some type of spanner wrench to remove thetank pump retainer ring.Anyone who has removed the tank and pulled the low pressure pump on the84 Cougar recall whether:1) Ring is metal or plastic2) Does it have large square notches on the outside, or3) Are they more like thin bars, or 4) Something else?ThanksDavid Quote Selected
Gas Tank Pump Retainer Ring (84 Cougar) Reply #1 – April 01, 2010, 02:01:49 PM The ring is steel, it has tabs that stick up. I honestly used a screwdriver wedged at the corner of the tabs and a hammer, and tapped at each tab a couple times till it came off. Mine was very rusty, too though so a couple of the tabs snapped off. Quote Selected
Gas Tank Pump Retainer Ring (84 Cougar) Reply #2 – April 01, 2010, 02:04:06 PM Hammer and a brass drift is the recommended tool set up. People sometimes use a regular punch but there is a risk of spark. The ring looks like this Quote Selected
Gas Tank Pump Retainer Ring (84 Cougar) Reply #3 – April 01, 2010, 02:34:08 PM Thanks all, that really helps. One other thought that comes to mind is my guess is (haven't looked it up yet) that there is a rubber bushing used between the fuel fillup tube and the tank. Does this normally need to be changed? Quote Selected

Also note, that it is a dealer-only item, and mine was extremely rotted and needed replaced. I believe it was only like $7 or so. I would just buy one ahead of time.2. The bushing for the filler neck is rubber, and I have never needed to replace one yet. (make sure you rub a little oil or something on the inside of the bushing when putting the tank back in, so that the neck will slide in easier). Quote Selected

Gas Tank Pump Retainer Ring (84 Cougar) Reply #6 – April 01, 2010, 08:03:43 PM Thanks all.FWIW: Shop manual only says to use 10w30 to lubricate bushing.Couldn't use dorman link for whatever reason, but glad to know. Use them periodically for this old car.Hopefully be an easy job. Biggest hassle, as I see it, is draining the tank, and where to put all the old fuel.David Quote Selected
