I don't know what to do...

First, the scenario:

I work on second shift, 4 pm till midnight. LOVE the hours, the supervisor is cool as cool can get, and we all get along. Mostly...
Well, last night, Todd, (supervisor) took his toolbox home with him.
Thinking he may not come back. He's burnt out, and wants to do something different.

Now, they have another guy that's in line for promo to super, but...he's not the team player that Todd is, he likes to complain about other people, and basically, he's a good guy, just hard to work for. There's a lot of drama, and it's a little stressful.

This is where I come in.
I am what they call a utility. I run the blenders that mix dye with the resin to be melted and molded into bottles. I also grind up the out-of-spec bottles and the trimmed pieces, and recycle them in with the resins.
I love my job, and I'm pretty ed good at it.

The last couple of days, I've stayed over 4 hours onto third shift because their utility..has well, no call-no showed, basically quit.

There's an opening on third...do I escape the drama that's on my shift, and go to the relative peace and quiet? There's no drama, it's laid back, hell, it's boring.

The pay stays the same, just the hours will obviously be different.
2nd is 4pm-12am, third is 12am to 8am.

I have 2 young kids, Cole is 16 months, and Annika is a little over a month old. I would be at work mostly while they sleep.

In 2003-2004 I worked on third shift in a different capacity at this place, other than getting sleep when I should've, I had no problems.

What would you do in my shoes?

I'd stay on the shift I liked the most.Drama doesn't affect me,I tend to ignore it and take the high road.If people want to talk about others, that's their business.I like day shift. It leaves me a lot more time with my family in the waking hours (as I call them). In the end, what shift do you like?Take the one that suits your needs, and your family's needs the most.I like to sleep with the wife at night, not by myself. So,days works for me.Some family's get really stressed when one works a different shift. No time together, kids miss you, etc. The "drama" may not be as bad as you perceive it to be.As I stated, talk is talk. You don't have to join in on the Girl's gossip (even if they are guys doing it.LOL).

Good points.
First isn't an option, unless I want a pay cut, and being back on the floor packing bottles (hell no to both!)

OK I am saying this in a buddy to buddy kinda of manner, so don't take it the wrong way please! If you leave the shift you enjoy and prefer because your co-workers have attitude issues, you are basically letting them control that part of your life (IMO). So what happens if you move to the other shift and drama starts up there to? Are you going to quit and go work some where else?

In other words I would have to go with Vinnie on this one. No one says you have to get involved with that bunch of drama queens. Go to work do your job and leave, find your social network somewhere outside of work. There is no way I would let the bad attitudes of co-workers be my determining factor on decisions.

All of this is easy for me to say sitting here where I am, ultimately you need to sit down with your family and discuss this and make your own decission.

Best of Wishes No matter what decision you make.
...and there was light!

No offense taken..i posted asking for ideas ;)

Yeah...it does seem like I'm avoiding drama by going to 3rd, although I'm not. Outside of work, I have about all these guys on facebook, we're all pretty friendly, I just want to keep it that way lol

I'll see what happens Monday before I make any definite plans to swap shifts though...:D

I always liked working third shift. If you need to get important stuff done, you've got all morning to do it. Then again, if you get your sleep schedule set, you can almost make third shift work like a first shift position.
