The hell with 3g,get a 6g,much more reliable.
They can be had from newer 3.8L mustangs, possibly others but i'm not sure.
I have a 6g on my 5L and it is leaps and bounds better than the 3 3g's i went through.

Whats the wiring and install difference?

Install is the same.
Wiring is a simple 2 pin connector and the regular batt wire.
No more difficult than a 3g,almost easier i think.

2001-2004 mustang 3.8L for sure possibly other vehicles with a 3.8L
6G is also slightly smaller so no install mods would be required.
Remember to look for the amp rating as they came from 95 to 130 amp.

I haven't tried a 6G but it can't be any worse than the issues I've had with my lifetime warranty 3G's from Napa - I think I'm on my 4th in 4 years (less than 30k miles total) for no apparent reason. They see 15v going in on the sensing wire, yet keep supplying 15v. It start off fine but increases in voltage on long trips. My last one was peaking around 15.3v before it lost all output in a 50 mile span and I had to get a replacement once again. Glad I installed that digital voltmeter in my dash some years ago...

Just my experiences with Napa's rebuilds - it's likely their fault but I don't remember if there was any downfall to going with a 6G. There are no bracket modifications needed and I think they can put out more power at idle with the same 130+ amps peak.

Haven't heard of any problems thus far.
6g's are slightly smaller and run cooler so they have a more stable input.
Had 2 of my previous 3g's charge almost 17 volts, regulaton went on one and the other the solder actually broke at the stator terminal and it would do as your and gradually increase in voltage.
I fixed the solder joint years ago but have not reinstalled it since my 6g.
