I knew that's what it was...

Best case is you drop the pan and clean all the bits out and replace the oil pump. (along with the aux shaft and dist).

I had one fail on the '84 XR-7.  Cleaned all the stuff out of the pan, replaced the pump, did a couple short oil changes, and it was fine after that.

Aux shaft is fine.  the car is running better than it has in a long time.

well turns out the Aux shaft is not fine it ate another distributor gear on the way to work today. went by the ford dealer and came up with this exploded view of the 2.3. Now will any aux shaft from a 2.3 work or does it have to be a 2.3t?  I have an old pinto block that has one of these will it work?

Well normally when the dist gear goes, so does the aux shaft.  At the very least the aux shaft gear will have an abnormal wear pattern on it, which would not be condusive to a long life for the new dist gear.

They are the same between the 2.3NA and 2.3T.

Esslinger makes a billet aux shaft and also a bronze dist gear. Not cheap though.

The bronze dist gear will at the very least save the aux shaft even if you don't go the billet route (and most folks don't need to).

Installing a good used set should be fine though for your use.
