My Dilemma

So I have found myself in a vehicle dilemma and need to vent!  My daily driver is a '99 F-150 4x4.  I must have a truck as a daily driver due to my job and the fact that my family has a cattle farm.  My truck has around 140,000 miles and has recently developed the following issues:
1.) tranny is slipping/bucking in OD.  Its going into the shop ASAP, I know the shop owner really well he thinks its not in need of an entire rebuild.  I know basically dick about auto transmissions, so the ball is in his court.
2.) Front end is in major need of work.  I think it will need ball joints.
3.) In the last few months it has started using a lot more oil.  When I 1st got the truck it might use 1 1/2 qts between oil changes.  Now its using 1 qt every 2-3 weeks.
4.) It needs tires pretty badly (due to the front end issues wearing tires quicker than you can rotate them)

So right now my wife and I are both blessed to have good jobs...no kids (yet) so we can handle our car payments all the while saving back as much as possible.  We do without a lot of extras like cable tv and going out, etc to save extra money.  However I have my '07 Mustang which is  near paid off (owe about $9k) and my wife just bought a Fusion this summer.

It sucks all this stuff has suddenly cropped up with the truck because for the last year we have been trying to find a house to buy.  Right now we rent, but we are ready to find a permanent home and settle in.  I had really planned on this truck lasting me another 2-3 years:punchballs:.  So let me know what you guys think I should do.

Should I bandage up the old truck and try to make it last for another year or two, knowing it may have even more problems down the road, or should I cut my losses and sell it (I have a guy interested) and find a suitable replacement.  This will probably require putting some cash down and getting a small loan, tapping into our future house down payment reserve somewhat.  I can't buy a beater, I need something reliable in a 1/2 ton or bigger that looks presentable (again for my job).  Over the last few days I have really been stressing out about this.  It seems like life just always throws curve balls.  There is no way in hell I am selling the Mustang this close to having it paid for...so that option is out. (I can hear the comments already..."sell the turdstang", etc lol).  Its the only new car I ever plan to buy, and was a reward to myself for working my tail off getting through college.

it I wish I were rich.  That would solve all of lifes little problems!! Lets hear some opinions...

IMO, now is the time to be buying not selling.  Start looking now and maybe you can find a good deal on a replacement work vehicle.  Until then, do what you have to do to keep the current truck running safely.

Ride it out, go easy on it and make it last. the money you spend on it will more than likely be less than a new truck's payment and insurance every month.

Sounds like you *need* the truck for your work, so...you'd be money ahead in the long run to get a decent, presentable truck now, instead of later...when you may not have the money to get it when you really need it.

Keep the Stang, you'd always regret selling it anyway, and it sounds like you're actually in good shape, money wise.

Thanks for the input guys, keep the ideas coming.  The problem I am finding is that 1/2 ton trucks that are decent mileage and good shape still bring pretty big bucks!
