Auxillary oil filter

Hi
I just got a 87 Turbo Bird with a little over 100,000 miles, it has one of the aux. oil filters, I can tell it has been on for quite some tine as it has some rust around the top of the filter but I can read the filter and it says "long life filter"...how long will these last?, replace it or leave it be?, the car appears to have been pretty well taken care of, so if the previous owner changed his oil when needed, how long will these filters last?
Thanks

if your asking the question, then change your oil man.  its a no brainer to change your oil.

Why would you leave a filter on anyway?

the filter will last as long as it wants, no one here can answer your question because no on knows what debris is floating around in the oil or flaking off the walls of the engine.

dont be cheap!  thats your answer.:D

if someone said ,,"oh,,, thats suppose to be good for 10k miles" then we would be setting you up for failure later.  Most of those "good for x miles" piece parts are rated against a perfect world with new parts.

I hear what you say....when I got the car the oil is clean and with over 100k, engine has very little noise and I think with the overall shape of the car that it has been maintained well, some long life filters will last x if not maintained well (oil not changed frequently) and will last xxx if maintained well...I was just wondering if the oil was maintained well, do these "long life aux." oil filters have a industry standard life?

the title of this thread sounds a bit different than the question your asking.
let me see if i understand what your asking...

you want to know how long(mileage/age?) your oil filer can last with just changing your oil alone?

this is the only link i can think off that can relate to what your asking even though it doesnt answer the question.

from your description i take it your oil filer is remote mounted and not just inline from the oil cooler, right?

Sorry for not describing correctly, this is a canister oil filter (looks like the same size as the one on the block) that is remotely mounted, I remember these back in the day and as long as you changed the oil and engine filter, these long life aux. filters would last a long time, I never bought or used one and wondered if anyone had any info on them. BTW I used to have a friend who used them on both the oil and tranny and he swore by them.

sounds like a good way to restrict your oil flow. As soon as you get enough  in them, they are just bypassed. Its like running two oil filters in a row, but as soon as one is clogged, it becomes bypassed. I really don't see any point in it if you change the oil regularly.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
