Combustion engines wont be going anywhere any time soon. Advances in tech. will let us go to our old oil fields to get the oil to deep to access today and I have read lots of pages on them saying there are still TONS of vast oil fields left on the earth. If most of the average joes buy hybrids in the next ten years that will cut oil consumption drastically BUT that will not stop drilling for oil as even hybrids need lubricant.

Also for a turbo/blower car I would run E98. Good stuff and corn is regrowable :D.

O yea i almost forgot i read we (USA) have enough shale to turn into oil to last us atleast 100 years (cant remember the exact number).

You think this won't cost a ton? One of the big reasons we don't use our own oil is that labor here costs much more. You can move around but the cost is going to increase drastically. Again, you'd better start soon on whatever you do because the hobby is going to get much more expensive. Their estimates of peak oil is still in the 2020's, that hasn't changed in the last 10 years. After that point, oil shoots up in price as supply dwindles down. Other countries becoming more industrial doesn't help the situation any either. Usage keeps rising globally - it's largely what caused the initial rise in gas prices a few years ago.

That's not to say you can't build a powerful vehicle that still gets good fuel economy though. I'm also not sure what they expect to do for many materials that are petroleum based. The majority of consumption is NOT passenger vehicle fuel.

Agan advances in technology will cut costs(well as long as everyone is honest on the numbers like that will happen). im not worried about the gas situation and if something does happen there will prob be some type of new fuel thats cheap. Also im an 18Y college student I dont think im getting that ainier anytime soon.

Also we wont have to worry about the costs and such because of the 2012 apoclypse right :clown:

they have enough in my home state to run the country for 100 years. But, were gonna run out of oil. Just like they said in the 70's,ans 80's and 90's....

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

There's only so much "technology" can do. Full electrics are being released, along with others that come from the factory with switchover to gas over a certain energy output. There IS fuel to run the country for awhile but that doesn't mean it will be affordable to waste in motorsports, or be exported if it becomes cheaper than other sources. Come 20 years from now, everyone will be singing a different tune. As I said, we must make the most out of it while we can as the hobby will be getting expensive quickly.

We'll just have to wait and find out. I look forward to electrics, its torque, and its simple modification capabilities (to the extent it can be) although here in the northwest that just means more fish population issues due to all the hydro power (80+%). I just hope the engine modifications for mustangs, whether or be electric, hydrogen, or whatever, will work well enough in our own cars too so they can stay on the road for the foreseeable future. The weight savings will be a huge benefit also.

It is nice to see that the projected cost of fuel for 2010 is $2.70 average, but up 5% from this year.

I'll leave it at that. Please start a thread in the appropriate place to debate more if desired: http://foxtbirdcougarforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=34

On topic, if you guys have some suggestions for adding a carpc, I'd like to hear them. I will be adding a 32-bit microcontroller to mine so I can have a basically unlimited supply of I/O to do anything necessary in the car. Reproducing the product for others' use isn't difficult, other than the hardware/wiring. It will start with memory seats, mirrors, automatic windows with speed control, auto dim/brightening of the carpc's lcd screen, tie ins to Binary Editor, EEC buttstuffyzer, Baumann's TCS software, iNav iGuidance, media player classic, input from any sensors you'd like without needing a separate DataQ or equivalent, and so on. It's actually pretty straight forward but controlling the seats with 8 settings will be interesting without using simple timers (may start with this first with a calibration mode so other people can use it without additional sensors). I will also deal with the issue of the power window motors letting you keep supplying current to them when they are already at max/min lift. It's a cheap hobby that will allow me to stay busy and not have the desire to bloe money on other gadgets. It will all be touchscreen based though with big friendly buttons - using a mouse, trackball, or touchpad will be somewhat annoying.

it would suck if you couldn't turn your ac on because your windows crashed. Just something to think about. Also of the home built CNC machines use ford window motors because there cheap and high torque. They have many engine programs for computers nowa days. Many are free.

Some of the things you want are already made. Kind of expensive, and I could see why you would want to do it yourself. I started collecting parts for a "carputer" when i was 15. I was going to throw a bunch of them in the back of my dad's 78 econoline.

I am not planning on removing any of the factory switches - everything can still be ran without the computer running.

I understand there are some things already out there but others there aren't. I already have software for the EEC, just need to expand upon it and other software with a decent GUI to give me everything I need without jumping around through different icons on the desktop and dealing with font/resolution problems of these apps.

Hmmmm, idk.... it would be nice but i think i'd just rather but two screens on my back seats cuz my car is the main cruising car when we go out on friday nights, and thats a distraction to my driving if stuff is flashing right in the side of my sight. but then again, the gauges would be neat cuz sometimes it feels like my car is lying to me when im going 100Mph and only turning 2k-2500 RpM :/
