I just purchased a 82 Thunderbird and noticed piping off the back of the engine that has exhaust fumes coming out of it when the car is running. Can I take this piping off and cap off the ends? What is the purpose of it?

That would be the exhaust pipes - I recommend you leave them on :p :hick:

I think even early as that, Ford had some emission for either moving air into the exhaust stream (Thermactor) or exhaust back into the motor (EGR). If whatever it were connected to, egr or smog pump, isn't there anymore, either cap the pipe or pull it off and plug the end at the exhaust or heads.

Emmissions garb, the pipe goes from the back of each head and T's off to the back of the intake to the EGR valve.

I have the 255 in my birds but it should be the same on a 302, you can see the blue and rust pipe from the back of both heads and it T's off right under the 3 vac lines right in the center.
