Some running issues!!

Ok ive been driving my dads bird since the weekend, and he wants me to get it running right over this week. Its been awhile since i've been on here so I forgot alot of the stuff you guys taught me. Heres the problems engine related.

I got a vac line off the intake, that keeps poping off and when it does I lose the boost gauge and it stalls out. So far i just clamped both sides so I can actually drive the car, cause its so bad it stalls between shifts.
Next issue is the idle sometimes is horrible, and sometimes it goes sky high. I figure its the IAC but I want to be sure. If i unplug it sometimes it will idle perfect, other times it wants to stall.
Continuing on. While on the throttle it feels sorta peppy, till around 3k-4k range all the way to redline its a DOG it feels jerky and like the powers gone, but the boost gauge still reads almost 15 psi.

Its all stock except I re ran the vac lines for the turbo to crank up the boost. The known problems are a bad EGR tube (they dont sell new ones anymore, I think ill delete it. Is there any ill effects to doing so?), and the turbo oil line, and VC leak oil badly... Gumming the turbo line with thread sealer worked for a bit, but it seems to be blowing it all over the trans again, and the front of the VC by the cam gear its pouring out and slinging all over hell. :punchballs: Gonna try and get a VC gasket on lunch break today.

Check engine light is intermittent, comes on when cruising off the throttle, goes off when you get on it. I forget how to check the codes with a paper clip. If someone could remind me, and post the link to decipher the codes that would be awesome! I know I should search for stuff, but its the last 2 weeks of my business course and I cant afford to surf the computer right now!

Thanks in advance guys, I know I can trust you guys to come to the rescue!

The idle can be numerous things, I just fixed my high idle, I could unlpug the IAC and set the base idle and it would idle fine, but my IAC was new. I checked the voltage on my TPS and couldn't get the volts down to where they were suppose to be. Replaced the TPS problem was solved. Here is article on setting idle and TPS.  http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/Idle-TPSadjustment_Revised_June2005.html
But with you blowing vacuum lines off this may not be your case.

Here is some opinions on the EGR. http://natomessageboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=022321

Stinger sells new oil lines goin to the turbo, I have read of several people using brake line for the pressure side oil line and having a custom hydraulics hose made for the return line.

Here is a link to retrieving codes. http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/RetrievingCodes/retrieving_eec_diagnostic_codes.htm

A rubber VC made by fel-pro is usually recommended, but if you end up getting a cork one I use the little red tubes off of brake cleaner cans and what not to help keep the gasket lined up while I set the VC in place.

Some one will probably speak up and let you know more than I know , but until then I thought I would give you somewhere to start.

I just bought a rubber fel-pro for the VC, and I figured out that the vac line is coming off cause the rubber that holds it is all oil impregnated so it expanded adn the hard plastic line was sliding out. 2 clamps and problem solved. Im gonna pull the IAC all apart, clean and grease it up see what that does. My roommate has a volt meter so im gonna have to test the TPS and see whats up with that. I have a spare one in the trunk as well so. Gotta go back to advance at 4 to get the TB gasket and see if they have anything I can use for intercooler couplers since mine are questionable. I rigged one a few years ago with a radiator hose haha. Thanks for the links, gives me a place to start from. I want this thing running good before I head out on my 8 hour round trip tomorrow. Dont need to break down on the side of the road in the winter...

so to set the TPS I stick pins in the tps side of the plug correct?

I used a straightened paperclip and you just slide it beside the proper wires from the back side of the plug going to the wiring harness. You actually probe the TPS side of the connector, it will slide between the "insulation" and the wire without damaging either. I found it easier to take the TPS off back probe it then put it back on. I used a continuity tester to make sure my probes were contacting the correct wires. They give you all the info you need, you may just need to read it several times to get all of it.

cleaned IAC and installed a new gasket with some black permatex, swaped the TPS cause I found it was bad, installed a new thermostat, fixed more vac lines, turned on the premium switch, filled the tank with premium and god  she runs almost 100% now!! Now I think I have an issue. I mentioned blowing the many vac line off at the intake, well I clamped it down, and drove it maybe 2-3 miles home and I blew the OTHER vac line off that tee. Someone thats very knowledgeable, do I have an issue I should be looking for?? I dont want to hurt this motor.

Tomorrow im doing a new V/C gasket (hoping thats the leak and not the cam seal), and a oil change, and checking the TPS again. Also running the codes cause its still there. Gonna try to clean all the OIL off this motor its GROSS, everything is COATED... Gonna clean the TB and upper and lower intake, got a new TB gasket too. Its not even my car and im making myself broke cause I keep fixing everything!! Its addicting this car is so much fun to drive I want it to run right!!
Next week I think if I get some nice weather its gonna be time to do the clutch. Its getting bad, once I get past 10 PSI its just clutch slip. I never can get it past half throttle!

Thanks again for those links they helped alot!

you sure the clutch isnt just oily?

Have you thought about just replacing all the vac lines?

Theyre prolly stock, and old. Those hard plastic lines get really brittle too.

are you running a boost controller?  sounds like your boosting way too much.  also check your pcv valve and replace with the motorcraft part. problem should go away

it might be oily, I dont know, what should I do to check/fix that??
And ive been replacing them as I go along, Ive got like 80 ft of assorted tubing, and boxes of clamps.

And no boost controller, I re-routed vac lines as per instructions found on here to turn up the boost. 3 inch exhaust, k&n and gillis valve are next in line.

Ok so the car has been running pretty  good. Clutch has gotten 110% better since driving it alot. Now I gotta get the oil leaks fixed and fix the CEL. Im hoping that will take care of the last running issues. Right now the issue is that it will go, then all of a sudden feel like someone kicked it square in the ass and it takes off like a rocket. But this only happens sometimes, other times its kindda dogish. Any info on were I should look on this thing to start getting it running its best.

car was running  good last night, and I was headed to my dads house up hill, downshifted and got on it, built boost, let off to shift and all of a sudden i hear a giant whoosh of air and now the turbo spools but nothing happens, except it tries to stall the car out. Did I blow an intercooler coupler??? What size's do I need since of course its POURING rain since I woke up and I need to order some silicone ones because this is the 2nd one thts broke on this car...
This car is gonna be the death of me, but I think im gonna steal it from my dad, I LOVE IT!! Suprises everyone I take for a ride in it. And its not right yet, and all stock, but it still beat a modded automatic scion TC hahaha.
