Column to floor shift conversion help

For any of you guys who have swapped out a column shift for a floor shift, how did you guys mount the shifter itself. I know a floor shift car comes with a metal plate which needs to be cut into the floor. I have removed that from the parts car, but how do you accurately determine where this get mounted to the car and the hole cut in the floorpan? What did you guys do to ensure you cut the hole in exact right place and everything lined up?

Anyone do one of these and able to help?

On my other car,I loosely sat the shifter in place, put the console and trim plate on to place the shifter, removed the console and trim panel (leaving the shifter in place) and bolted it down.I probably over complicated it.That was 9 years ago though.
