rear end removal March 11, 2005, 02:01:31 AM I'm goin' to pick-n-pull tomorrow, getting a rear end from a TC. Are there any special tools to remove it? the car is supported by the typical wheels welded together and used as jack stands, so the rear end is lowered already. I was told that I don't need to compress the springs at all, since they're already stretched out. is there a special way to get it out? I'd like it to go as smoothly as possible, I'm doing it early in the morning before goign to class :p any help is appreciated. thanks Quote Selected
Re: rear end removal Reply #1 – March 11, 2005, 03:05:56 AM When you disconnect the shocks the springs will just fall out... Then its just the drive shaft and controll arms and its outta there. Don't forget the parking brake cables and get the hydraulic lines as well... Quote Selected
Re: rear end removal Reply #2 – March 11, 2005, 03:32:18 AM hydraulic lines=brake lines? how far do those go, all the way to the master cylinder? or is there a junction closer to the rear end? Quote Selected
Re: rear end removal Reply #3 – March 11, 2005, 09:19:42 AM make sure you can take it in and out of gear to spin the drive shaft. it makes it easyer to get to the bolts around it in the back. then just put it back in gear to take em out. also... bring a hammer and the biggest breaker bar you own with a full can of lube "theirs always time for lube" bring some line wrenches for the single brake hose attaching to the body in the middle. and if the rear is up in the air, you might want somebody to help bring it down while your unbolting it. if the axle starts to twist while your takeing it out the bolts get stuck in it, so you gotta twist it back and beat the bolts out like pins. But in the rust belt they can be a bitch... Quote Selected
Re: rear end removal Reply #7 – March 11, 2005, 11:56:14 AM Bring a hack saw just incase.4 bolts that hpld the rear can be a bitch to undo with hand tools make sure u have 1/2 braker bar with goos sockets or impacts. A hammer would be help full to. Just hammer the bolts out and twist the end.I live in Ont canada so this job in a bone yard can be a pain but thanks to mini torchs u can cut the arms and rear end falls out. Quote Selected

Re: rear end removal Reply #10 – March 12, 2005, 02:32:39 PM how do you remove the flex lines? just regular wrenches? Quote Selected
Re: rear end removal Reply #11 – March 12, 2005, 05:19:27 PM An open end wrench will likley round over the bolts. The proper tool to use is a flare nut wrench. However since its a junkyard car, just cut the flex line, or try your luck at the fittings with vice grips. Quote Selected
Re: rear end removal Reply #12 – March 12, 2005, 06:35:55 PM well after about 4 hours, here it isfor the brake line, I just used regular wrenches, and unscrewed the smaller fitting off of the bigger onem so I have thw flex line and the bracket where it connects to the metal lines.somebody took the calipers, I'll have to go back sometime and get them.also, I couldn't figure out how to get the e-brake lines, and I was dead tired and sunburned so I'll get those some other time as welltotal cost for everything: $55+$30 core charge. they didn't charge me extra for the quad shocks, brake pads, or even the spare tires I put on it :D Quote Selected
