what auto trans is in the turbo coupe? Reply #1 – May 02, 2008, 02:53:15 PM The auto trans in the TC was the A4LD. I believe it's very similar, if the not the same as the 4cyl mustang trans. I'm sure the TC guys on here can tell you for sure. Quote Selected
what auto trans is in the turbo coupe? Reply #2 – May 02, 2008, 03:09:45 PM 1983-86 Turbo Coupe/XR7 automatic = C3 (3-speed, no overdrive)1987-88 Turbo Coupe automatic = A4LD (4-speed overdrive)The A4LD was used in Ford's 2.3 RWD vehicles including the Ranger. LD stands for Light Duty so don't expect it to handle gobs of torque. Honestly I have no idea what other vehicles used the C3. It's been pretty much forgotten by now. Quote Selected
what auto trans is in the turbo coupe? Reply #3 – May 02, 2008, 03:13:59 PM i guess my big concern is the availability of these transmissions...... supposedly, the engine was recently rebuilt and the trans decided to quit..... i know aod's are a dime a dozen, and i wanted to get an idea of the availability of a trans to swap... i'd much rather get another cougar, another 4-eyed at that, but if i can save this one, i'll settle for it Quote Selected
what auto trans is in the turbo coupe? Reply #4 – May 02, 2008, 06:40:00 PM If it's the 87-88 (A4LD) you can find 'em in 4-cyl Mustangs & Rangers, and older 4.0 Rangers, Explorers and Aerostars. I think the 4.0 and 2.3 might have the same bell housing, but the 3.0 has a unique bell housing. Not sure on the 4.0=2.3 thing, though. If it is correct you might be better off finding one behind a 4.0 as it might be built a bit beefier. The C3 you'd probably be limited to early 80's 4-cyl Mustangs and Turbo Coupe/XR7's. what auto trans is in the turbo coupe? Reply #5 – May 02, 2008, 08:24:05 PM i'm sorry, i forgot to say it was an 87-88..... and it does have the a4ld...... so would it be better for me then to try to find one out of a truck (4.0)? would the gearing be different? if so, is that better or worse.... would i be giving up fuel mileage or acceleration to get a stronger trans?thanks for all the info Quote Selected
what auto trans is in the turbo coupe? Reply #6 – May 02, 2008, 08:31:44 PM Dunno about the trucks, but the '88 Mustang A4LD uses a different valve body than the TC... A freind who bought my tranny had to swap valve bodies and the electrical connector on the side... Possibly the newer Stangs used the same configuration as the TC...Put a 5 speed in it, only way to go with the half motor...BUT you'll need a crossmember, drive shaft and a few other pieces to use it... Still would need the T5/AOD X-member and driveshaft... Quote Selected

what auto trans is in the turbo coupe? Reply #11 – May 26, 2008, 05:52:12 PM Haha, there is no justice in this world! C3 are common in European Fords. I think that all automatics were C3 in Taunus, Granada, Capri etc. till 1985. I had two C3 in my garage and sold them in a price of junk lately. But C4 and AOD are like gold here! Quote Selected
