Smooth, rounded surfaces will increase the voltage necessary to jump the gap...

A arc will more readily jump from a irregular/sharp/pointed object...

Another interesting point.  Maybe that's why I had less issues with the multi-point rotor.  Even though per Standard QA was designed for RFI, maybe a side benefit was less buildup because of point.  Another issue may have been the gap.  Unknown whether gap on wire < gap of blade type.
