Napa pulled a fast one on me

New rack and pinion was bought a couple weeks ago.

I decided that the power steering lines were too corroded up on the rack to even bother with.  I decided to order both the high and low side and these parts are in the garage now along with the rack.

I cut the old lines up near the rack which made life easy since i have new hoses.

I remove the rack and set up my outter tie rod ends to match the old alignment.

I go to install the high presure line on the rack prior to putting it in along with the low line.

,, napa sold me a correct hose picture perfect looking OEM but the fitting is one size too big.

off to advance tomorrow for a different one.

This took a two hour job into two days and im not too happy now.

impossible on the rack end,, type of fitting does not allow for such a mod.

napa PN for the pres hose is 7-2202

They probably sold you a hose for a 15:1 rack. I seem to remember running into something like that when I installed the TC rack into my car, and the hose had to be replaced because my fitting was too small.

my old rack and my new rack fittings match.  Perhasps they sold me the 15:1 presure hose?

my old / new pres hose fittings on the pwr steering end do not match as far as design goes.  The old / new power steering hose will mate to the power steering though.

the new presure hose on the rack end will not mate.

does anyone know the exact difference between the two 15:1 and 20:1?

NAPA sold you the hard line part of the return line? I went into NAPA and asked for the return line and all they had was the rubber hose. I specifically asked about the hardline portion and they said no luck. I also went to AutoZone, PepGirls and Sanel and searched the internet. The recommended solution was junkyard. Luckily, someone on the Corral collects stuff and sent me one I that I was able to clean up and use. Please post P/N for the return hardline - assuming they gave you the correct part for that :hick:

NAPA retrun line (preformed OEM) pn 7-1977
Wonderful quality!!

My issue with the presure hose was an honest mistake i think.  The hose they sold me would fit a 15:1 rack im sure such as the 3.8L with the large power steering pump pully.

I went to advance and got the correct presure hose since napa was not open today.

New rack installed
Alignment complete duplicating lock nut location on the outter tie rod end and installed.

One pint of transmission fluid in the pump and she is good to go.

now all i have to do is get my core back and a refund for the presure line.

I did discover something though which i think is note worthy.  There was a sticker on my rack from ford indicating it was remanufactured.  I conclude that if the rack were original,,, the inner tie rod ends would have allen set screws in the knuckle like my 3.8 did.

Chuck / and all
I tried to experiement with removing the inner tie rod end on the old rack.  I tried to install a tiny screw which i could not get to work out because the hole was just so  small on the jammed in roll pin in place of the allen set screw.  I thought for a moment that perhaps drilling out the roll pin would be best but I imagined the rack installed up in the car.  that would make it an almost impossible event.

So,, with a reman'd rack, i dont think i would ever have any luck changing the inners out without destroying the rack main shaft itself.  I noticed that the roll pin was installed on the back side of the knuckle on the driver side and on the forward side of the knuckle at the passanger side.

atleast i learned a little bit more.

I wanted badly to investigate the adjustment of the inners and see if this unit had inners that were designed with the metal disck inside the inner or the plastic disc.

ordeal is over and done so no biggie, just lost time getting the right part.

When I got my bird running the first thing it did was blow a pressure hose.  It was a sport 15:1 rack.  I had a spare 20:1 rack in the parts pile and grabbed the hose off of it and put it on the sport rack with no problems.

So I believe the hoses are the same.  Both racks were on 84 birds.
