Paint Suggestions / opinion April 15, 2008, 02:08:43 PM I will be having my 85 bird repainted, and I wanted some advice from some people who love their bird or cougar as much as I do....1. Do you prefer to paint the body side molding the original gray/black, or paint it the color of the car? I am leaning toward refurbishing the chrome on the top of the molding and painting it either the factory gray... or black. So I guess this question comes down to either gray or black... on a metallic red/maroon car.2. I will be adding the Turbo Coupe front bumper and the ground effects over that. I am torn on whether to paint the car a two-tone with red on the top and either black or silver on the bottom. OR just paint the car all red. I'm leaning toward all red like I had purchased it, however it did not have the ground effects on it. So if all red, I would still paint the bumper molding gray or black... would this look ok? It seems like a lot of the cars with ground effects have painted the bumper molding to match the rest of the car.I realize that ultimately it comes down to personal preference, but I want to consider all options and your experiences prior to spending the green. Paint Suggestions / opinion Reply #1 – April 15, 2008, 02:19:09 PM They all sound good really. I removed my trim inbetween the wheels but i like the trim body color when the car is one color. If you were to do a two tone then I think silver/ gray would look good on bottom. Did the body kit come with the car when you bought it or did you hunt it down?P.S. Dont take paint advice fron CarPimp1987 Quote Selected
Paint Suggestions / opinion Reply #2 – April 15, 2008, 02:59:43 PM Yup, seached for carpimp87... and all I have to say is to each their own. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. LOLThanks for the thoughts.... I'll just have to keep looking at pictures prior to making the final call..., man.. I searched... and searched.... and searched for the ground effects. Finally found them on cragslist Rhode Island. I paid on a sunday.... and a month later had not received them. Got very worried.... so filed a claim through paypal... what do you know they showed up! Anyway, found the one one piece front air dam, side skirts, and a rear spoiler for $300. The front piece was in good shape, the side pieces need some restoration... but I'm telling you, I searched every day until I found them. Little did I know that I would need the TC bumper, fog light brackets, and possibly the bumper reinforcment metal thing.Actually, in the lag between the purchase and the receiving of them, I found the front air dam on ebay. It was a three piece, but given what I went through to find them, I purchased a spare in case I wreck the bird. My wife thinks I'm crazy... but you never know.... in another 20 years they will be impossible to find.Quote from: cougar86_89;214108They all sound good really. Paint Suggestions / opinion Reply #3 – April 15, 2008, 03:28:23 PM Hell, they're impossible to find now. Which red do you have on the car now? Is it the non-clearcoat red (code 2E), or the metallic clearcoat red (code 2M)?See here: http://www.coolcats.net/fox/1985colors.htmlI'm all for silver on the bottom because it shows off the car rather nicely. Silver is neutral, and when the road reflects in it, that gives the car depth. I learned this on my old '88 Blue Max. I have it this way on the convertible also. It's usually the perfect color to complement any other color, and also to show off the lines of the car.However...in this case, with either red, silver might be a little overpowering. Anything similar but darker (like charcoal) will make the car look dirty. Black makes it look like a mistake was made. I'm going to vote for a darker red metallic. Either way it will complement the red of the car without overpowering. The '98-ish Mercury Mountaineers had a two-tone red setup like that and I drool every time I see one on the road. It's one of the most exquisite factory two-tone schemes I've seen on a Ford vehicle. Would love to see it translated over to these cars. Quote Selected
Paint Suggestions / opinion Reply #4 – April 15, 2008, 04:02:42 PM I found a picture of a 2000 Mountaineer like Eric mentioned: I love the look and second the opinion. In this case I would paint the molding the darker red to match the bottom. If you go with another two tone I'd go with black molding (gray just makes it look faded to me, even if it isn't) and if you go all red with the body kit I'd make the molding red as well. I also noticed you are in Lincoln too, so Hi :) Quote Selected
Paint Suggestions / opinion Reply #5 – April 15, 2008, 04:37:17 PM Actually, my first year of college it was so easy to get loan money that I repainted the car.... Claret red. I wanted it to be the only car in Lincoln, NE that color. Well, the day I picked up my car, there was another tbird owner there. He liked the color so much that he painted his the EXACT same color. The wierd thing is..... I saw his car parked only 8 blocks from my house. Oh, I was steamed. I took alot of time to pick out the color.... Not sure if I will go with the same color again... but mine is definately not stock. I added a picture to my avatar... so maybe you can get an idea there. Thanks for the suggestions.... I actually really like Silver.. and titanium... but most likely I'll stay with Red... and if I decide to go two tone... then probably silver. The darker red is an idea too! Thanks.Quote from: EricCoolCats;214116Hell, they're impossible to find now. Which red do you have on the car now?
