how much in and out rear wheel play should there be? April 14, 2008, 12:29:44 AM so i had the rear axle up in the air so i could diagnose a vibration i have at higher speeds..... got it up to 70 or so and noticed the rear wheels wobbling.... so i stopped and checked the wheels and found that the clunked in and out of the axle shaft a good bit..... i know it should have a little play, but i think mine might go in and out about 1/4 or 1/8 inch or so.... i made a video of it to show... i hope you can see it.... does that look normal or is my rear end going?my build sheet says i have a "non-locking rear axle" if that makes a differencethankshttp://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=32344044 Quote Selected

Reply #5 – April 15, 2008, 01:36:44 PM From the 84 shop manual:Under troubleshooting "knocks".Knock is also characteristic of excessive end play in the axle shafts. Up to 0.030 inch is allowed in most axles.NOTE: Be sure to measure the end play with a dial indicator. not by feel. A guess usually feels like more end play than there actually is.On the intergral axle, end play is allowable up to .025 inch but can be reduced to .005 inch. It is controlled by the C-washer that holds the shaft in the pocket of the side gear.To reduce the clearance, cut a shim in the pattern of the C-washer and install it behind the washer. Do not reduce the end play to less than .005 inch. Quote Selected
