My 84 shop manual shows the Duraspark II and III modules as both having two plugs. The II having a blue grommet with 6 wires and the III having a brown grommet with 5 wires.

However it also shows a module with a third plug identified as the "spark retard input". They don't identify what ignition system this module is used on.

thanks for the reply Soft

I think I found the answer to my own ?

I found this on a webb site

"Some 1978 and later engines use a special Duraspark Dual Mode ignition control module. This module is equipped with an altitude sensor, and an economy modulator. This module, when combined with the additional switches and sensor, varies the base engine timing according to altitude and engine load conditions. Duraspark Dual Mode ignition control modules can be identified by the three wiring harnesses emerging from the control module."

has anyone heard of this?

Yep, Pop had a '79 Cougar with the three plug Duraspark module... Should have a yellow grommet...

Was bought new from my uncles dealership in WV... Guess that's why it was considered a high altitude vehicle...
