I agree, but find me an American made vehicle in production right now that would fit this bill besides what they chose.
I think the G6 Coupe or Convertible would have been a better choice. Sure, it's no powerhouse and not as popular as the Mustang, but at least it's still a Pontiac and has some of the same design characteristics of the old Firebird.

Well although i do like kitt as a mustang, why did they just not use a new Camaro or Fire turd (we all know if the camaro is successful Pontiac wont sit by idly and chebby almost defiantly has prototype Fire turds sitting around)

OK if it's not as popular, it has less appeal and less chance to catch someone's eye on a commercial to watch the show.  I fail to see how the G6 would be better....

You can still find GTO's on lots, and even a T/A that is a few years old (the Firehawks still look killer) would fit the bill a lot better than a Mustang. Imagine if they'd have done this to the Dukes!

Well they were afraid of a hillbilly revolt with the dukes.

I feel the General Lee is a much more iconic car than Kitt was or will ever be.  Kitt was more of a car that was contemporary and fit the era the show was on the air.  A lot of Kitt's appeal comes from all the technological things incorporated into, what was then, one of the hottest cars around that was affordable to Joe Everyone.  Imagine if they had used an '82 Mustang as the original Kitt?  It would not have even came close to having the same appeal.  The General kind of transcends that.  The silhouette of the Charger in orange with the rebel flag was the identity of the General.  No more, no less.  I think that Kitt, by nature has to be updated with time.  So did the original show.  Remember when Kitt got all those newer gadgets?

Both cars that were axed due to poor sales.....I'd take the T/A over the GTO as far as looks are concerned, but again, no longer in production.  They wanted a car with a future.  The same was true in the early '80's.  Then and now I'm sure some advertising execs for vehicle manufacturers approached the shows respectively and pitched their lines as well.
