Got bit by my dog

This may sound like a bit of a rant, and it probably is, but I feel I must say something. I probably walked into it myself for posting a story about my brother's pitbulls  The thing is, pitbulls were bred for fighting...other pitbulls. They are bred so that their owners can break up a fight without fear of being attacked. The problem comes when owners do not respect the dog and make sure it knows early own who it's master is. If their owner is not dominant, then they can be dangerous. In the case of my brothers dogs, they playfight with each other, but have been trained well enough it never goes far, and they stop immediately if one gets even the slightest injury. They actually look out for each other sort of like brother/sister. Again the problem is when people force them to fight dogs they don't know, especially fighting to death, or near death. When Mischa and Mather fight (wrestle is probably a better term for what they do), they do it purely for fun and watching their speed (especially Mather since he is part grayhound and fast enough to keep up with them) and their agility is truly amazing.

Are pitbulls safe with other dogs? So long as they are watched while they get to know each other, and have seperate food bowls when they are fed. Are pitbulls safe with humans? Definately (although Mischa generally doesn't like strangers and will snap back lightly [she grew up on the streets for a bit before my brother saved her from sure death since "dangerous" dogs are usually destroyed by the pound]) Would I fear either of them attacking anyone they know? Certainly not! Should someone who knows their owner and is meeting them for the first time be afraid of them? Not unless he wants the dogs to walk all over him. Should someone with harmful intent to my brother's family be afraid of them? He should be terrified.

There are numerous dogs I would be more afraid of randomly attacking their owners than pitbulls, the problem is, for those bad owners who's pits do attack, their strength can make things ugly fast and that is what makes the headlines.

End Rant.

If anyone would like to discuss this further, please start a new thread. Sorry I invaded this one, I'm done in this thread.

Let's not stereotype a particular breed of dog for biting, when it's well-known that ANY breed of dog will bite.
Just that Pit Bulls, and other large, "aggressive" breeds are prized for that very trait are very often abused and mistreated to make them extremely aggressive and dangerous to be around.
My 2 Pits have never bitten anyone except in play, but no, I wouldn't trust them around a small child or a stranger either.

The fact that a lot of people think EVERY pit, rott, dalmation, doberman, etc etc are vicious just fvcking  me off.
Some are that way, but most are not.
It's the bad stories that the media has a frenzy on.
Besides, if a black lab ripped a kid's face off, how many other black lab's would be persecuted for that?

It's the whole "all pit bulls are vicious" stigma that I hate.
But to keep my ass out of a jam, mine stay locked up in their own building, and I let them out to play only when nobody else is around.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I can see where it's going already.
I bet if Carl had a poodle and it bit him, nobody would even mention vicious dogs.
And it's ed funny how ppl jump all over Pit Bulls when the proper dog breed was mentioned. :flame:

Sorry Carl, to go off in your thread.

I'm curious, do any of you dog owners have insurance on the dogs?

Because when applying for homeowners insurance, you are asked whether or not you have pets...and if you respond, "Yes," then you're asked what kind, and if you reply that you have a dog, then they ask what breed. Basically they want to know if you have a KNOWN vicious dog. If so, then you're going to get a much higher rate (if they'll even cover you at all) to cover liability. Say what you want about prejudice, etc. but when it comes to insurance, it's very cut and dried. And if insurance companies classify a certain breed of dog as "vicious"...they've got to have a reason why. Just food for thought.

BTW, when I told my new agent I had a cat, I also mentioned that it bites. No special rates for vicious cats. ;)

Carl, I'm glad you're alright and hope that it was just an isolated incident.

......in his defense we were flicking his dry food across the room and he chases it and eats it. I was a little too close I think and he turned around really quick and bit me.
