tire/wheel combos October 15, 2007, 09:59:33 PM whats the thinnest and the widest tire you can SAFELY run on a 7'', 8'' and 9'' inch wide rim? Quote Selected
what width you can run partly depends on sidewall height Reply #1 – October 21, 2007, 03:54:43 AM Generally speaking, a taller profile gives you more size choices. A 245 60/15 works on a 7" rim better than a 50 series of the same width. What were you thinking about running? Quote Selected
tire/wheel combos Reply #2 – October 21, 2007, 06:20:23 PM well, i found these that come with tireshttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/17-Mustang-Cobra-R-Wheels-Rims-255-ZR-Tires-79-93_W0QQitemZ290171907846QQihZ019QQcategoryZ66483QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItembut will a 9 inch wide wheel be O.K. on our cars without rubbing?theres the 8'' front, 9'' rear package, i think 8'' are ok on the front, but i'll have to buy my own tires, and idk what sizes are the best to run.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/17-8-9-Silver-Mustang-Cobra-Rivet-Wheels-Rims-79-93_W0QQitemZ290172240177QQihZ019QQcategoryZ43957QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItembut if 9'' will work o.k. on thr front, i think ill just opt for the 9'' and tire package. tire/wheel combos Reply #3 – October 21, 2007, 09:22:41 PM Up front, I don't think 9" will fit without changing something that isn't easy to change. With std. offset, the tire will protrude past the front wheel arch. You might try '05 Mustang offset (+42mm?), not sure if they will clear the struts.255's might work, since 245's will. Keep in mind, lowering the front 1+", 245 60/15's will rub the top of the fender liner during spirited driving.Back in the day, SVO said the max sizes were 245's on 8" wheels up front, 275's on 9" wheels out back. tire/wheel combos Reply #4 – October 21, 2007, 09:58:14 PM great, so i guess i gotta go, 245/40r17 on an 8'' up front, kinda sucks cus that 9'' wide with tires is a pretty good deal. i cant see any practicallity in going anything wider then 255 on the back with the power i'll be making. thanks for all your help. looks like i got some more shopping around to do... tire/wheel combos Reply #5 – October 22, 2007, 06:51:55 AM I have the 17x9's all around, with 245's up front and 25's out back.I had to add a 1/8 spacer so the tires wouldn't rub the struts.I will eventually install 17x8's up front. Quote Selected

tire/wheel combos Reply #7 – November 15, 2007, 01:16:05 AM I have 245/50/16 on 7 inch wide snowflake rims and it works fine.I also have 275/60/15 on 8 inch rims and this works great also.I tried to run 10.5x28x15 slicks on a 7 inch 10 hole and this did not work at all, this is about a 275 tire. Too much curve and I lost traction, also looked kind of funny.TED Quote Selected

tire/wheel combos Reply #10 – November 16, 2007, 05:42:32 AM I posted this once before, but will add this again. Goodyear used to recommend 205-7", 225-8", and I would assume 245-9". Many Fox Mustangs came with 225-60-15s on 8" wheels. I tried a set of free 245-50-16" Gatorbacks on the rear on 8" Enkies, and they felt "squirmy" compared to the 225s. And they wore in the middle, not evenly across. 20mm is not exactly one inch, I know. But this size-area was where the info applied. I have seen roadracers use 275s on 10"s, and 315-325s on 12"s. RR guys want the minumum amount of sidewall flex, so the size/width ratio is followed pretty closely. This would be optimum for the street, but not written in stone. Quote Selected
