How do you remove window motor on 1986 cougar

Here's the short & sweet version:

Hopefully you're familiar with removing the door panel. Find and remove any screws along the edge of the interior door panel. Next pull the armrest off, then unscrew the pull strap and unsnap all the clips around the edge of the door panel. With the panel off, look towards the bottom of the door and you'll find three dimples in the steel. You'll notice that the're located directly inline with the bolts holding the window motor in. Drill those out big enough to fit a 1/4" extension inside. Then with a 1/4" extension stuck through the door, stick the socket (10mm I believe) on the end of the ext. by reaching through the speaker hole inside the door. Once you have the motor off, unplug it and pull it out through the speaker hole.

Out of curiosity... what's the problem with the motor. Is it still running, just not going up and down? If that's the case then simply get a gear repair kit and save about $60.

Both motors turn but it sounds like the gear is worn because it continues to spin even after the stops and the window slowly skips going up. I dont believe it is the motor because it sounds fine. I just bought the car for $400 on monday because the girl was fed up with the windows. It is a 1986 with a 5.0 with 132,000 on it. I bought it because my 1988 with a 3.8 had 227,000 on it and the front end banged and the engine was not running smoothely.I replacced the motor at 140,000. It had a good life. Ill keep it for a couple weeks to see if there are any parts i can use.

Yep, good deal. Definitely just get a gear kit (I guess you need 2) for it. If you have time to wait, check e-bay, they're cheaper there.

who was it,, help me out here,,,,,,,,,

someone really came up with a sweet idea on how to fix em with out buying anything.,,,, Wooden dowel inserts were installed (3 i think about 1/4'' long)

jasonwho maybe? jabobia maybe?

anyways,, i fixed one on my 84 by laying the center metal gear inside the outter plastic gear and bonding them with epoxy but that no longer kiddie arm proof (like id wanna test it)

its wear usually happens where these two gears meet.

I have an 84 Cougar and the drivers side power window went
screwy. It will go up and down with help. Motor sounds fine but
without assistance it goes ca-clunk, ca-clunk, ca-clunk, ca-clunk
and the glass acts like iy wants to go, but wont. I have the door
panel off what now? I looked around in there, but haven't found
anything out of place.

Okay, I found a website that described some nylon rollers inside
the motor assy. that break with age. They suggested replacing them
with 3/8" aluminum pcs about 10 mm in length. Please look at this
page and see if this is the same type of setup I/ we have, and can
this fix my problem, sounds exactly like what I have going on.

your right on track,,
or you could epoxy the center gear to the outter gear ,, make em
become one gear and call it good.

Thanks man, I work in a machine shop, so I will try the 3/8"
stock first, but will 'borrow' some good epoxy while I'm at
it...just in case. Man that motor looks to ba a pain to get out. I
have looked for some detailed instructions on line with no avail. My
Haynes manual just shows how to take the door panel off. That's the
easy part. I think I may need a degree in quantum physics to get
that motor out!! I'll figure it out, I usually do (hopefully I won't
break more than I fix )!

well,, here is how it goes on an 86 which i think wasnt much
different from my 84.

Just on the forward bottom side of the door (with the pnl off),
there are gonna be 3 dimpls punched into the door skin.

There will be one on the bottom and two up a wee bit higher.

You drill out the dimples(cause thats why the dimples are there)
with a drill bit big enough to pass a 10mm socket on a 1/4 inch
extention. from that point you can pass the socket thru the hole
and up to the three motor bolts.

once they are out,, you can pass the motor thur the speaker hole or
somewhere to unplug the conn.

My door wiring harness came loose from the door frame (stupid
plastic clips) & kept trying to hang up the regulator. Might check
yours while you're in there. I duct taped mine to the guard beam.

It works! I had a friend with at little more time on his hands
make me the bushings from tool steel. The only differenve is that it
was a 7mm socket for an 84. Thanks to everyone especially, jcassity.
I would have spent 60 bucks on a motor if not for my friends here.

One little piece of advise. THOSE "DIMPLES' ON AN 84 COUGAR
ARE SLIGHTLY BIGGER THAN THE "TIP OF A PIN" AND ONE OF THEM WAS
UNDER THE "TAPE" THAT HELD THE INSULATION ON THE INSIDE OF THE
DOOR.......... IT WORKS. JUST FIND THE "DIMPLES" AND DRILL THEM
OUT. (I used a half inch bit) and you can "reach inside" with your
socket (3/16 i think) and back out the three screws and you got the
"window motor" motor loose. Then you use "dynomite, a crow bar, a
hatchet, a large hammer, a bent screwdriver and your pocket knife to
get the freekin "plug in" un-hitched. Take out the little screw on
the top of the gear box and get a lard stand to put the grease in.
I will put it together tomorrow after I go get the "SLUGS" to go in
the gearbox.
TKS LOADS GUYS ... I AM NEW HERE BUT YOU GUYS SAVED ME A BUNDLE
FIXING MY WINDOW. .... (I'm kinda glad i stold a Cougar now)

Oh boy,

From another site on Fords--all you may have needed is a motor gear
replacement kit----the gear and the 3 plastic dowels that encircle
the gear just get old and worn out. The electric motor for the
window is NOT likely the problem for what you stated. The reason
for the 3 plastic dowels (and I am passing this on from other
source) is to permit failure of the gear if someone puts their neck
in a closing window! I replaced 2 gear kits in my Ford and the
windows work like new--14 year old car.. Gear kit= $20 if I
remember?

The local Ford dealer told me today the gear isn't serviced. My driver's window started going down, but not up and it would go up with help, as it would tilt forward. Now it moves a teeny hint up or down.

I had the exact same problem. I tried to think of an idea to repair it and I didnt even come close to the ideas I read above! So I was reduced to going to the local Ford dealer and buying the gear kit (which they didnt stock) and it hit me in the wallet about 28 bucks out the door. Those regulators are servicable...dont let them tell you otherwise.

Ford doesn't service the gear, but aftermarket does. Siemens is the mfr and the parts# is 33000. I found one for $19.99 from Checker Auto Parts. I didn't need one afterall, I yanked my trim off and found the glass seperated from the sashes so I siliconed them back to the glass, just so they'd drop again today! This time I put a piece of 2" medical adhesive tape over the silicone tabs still on the glass and cleaned out the sashes and forced the glass carefully into the sashes and it holds tight now. I called an aquaintaince of mine who has a glass shop, he said my repair (with the tape) is a good way to do so, if not, he told me to use 2 part epoxy next if it occurs again.

I dont think they would repair the motor assy, but I sure did buy the kit from my local Ford parts dealer...
